Bernie Sanders Goes on Desus & Mero , Gets Quizzed on the Prices of Rare Sneakers
On Thursday, the year's greatest crossover event came to Showtime: Desus and Mero, the kings of late-night television, interviewed Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. A smorgasbord of topics is covered, some less surprising than others, including mutual dunking on Donald Trump, mutual praising of Cardi B (a Bronx legend and Bernie supporter), and a thorough rundown on the benefits of legalizing weed nationwide.
But around the 5:30 mark of the interview, Bernie is thrown a curveball—Desus and Mero ask him to judge a series of sneakers to confirm whether they have the "Bernie-approved drip," then ask him to guess the resale price of said sneakers. (Bernie laughs at the drip reference, which I assign two Pinocchios.)
First up, the Travis Scott Nike Air Jordan 1 Retro High, which Bernie eyeballs at $100. When he's told the actual number is $1,500, he reacts like Joe Biden just told him the United States is incapable of enacting a comprehensive Medicare for All plan.
Next, the Off-White x Nike Air Jordan 1 Retro High "Chicago," which Bernie deems a "nice sneaker," though he doesn't learn his lesson, pricing it at $250. The actual resale value is $4,500, which compels Bernie to shake his head in disgust. "I really don't like that idea of people paying $4,500 bucks for [shoes]," he says.
Lastly, the Air Yeezy 2 Red Octobers. Bernie, now fully aware of the circumstances of this game, deigns to predict $1,000, only to be told the resale value is closer to $11,000. At this point, he is fully exasperated by hypebeasts and their ilk. He tells Desus and Mero that his optimal sneaker price is in the $45 to $50 range, preferably a clean pair of New Balances. His other requirements: shoelaces and rubber soles.
