Berkeley Springs spruces up for spring, prepares for seasonal farmers’ market

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. (DC News Now) — In the eastern panhandle of West Virginia, the community are out to make Berkeley Springs shine by cleaning up and getting ready for their seasonal farmers’ market.

“We all pitch in to help clean up the town during the month of April and pick up limbs and stuff to prepare for spring cleaning where we start mowing and keeping the town nice for visitors,” says Rebecca MacLeod, leading the spring cleanup campaign.

MacLeod says the cleanup is centered around volunteerism.

“The Warm Springs Watershed participates every year as do Friends of the North Berkeley Rail Trail, just people who want to help and do something good for the community,” MacLeod said.

Visitors to the annual farmers’ market say that it’s been a tradition for more than two decades. And bring your appetite.

“We have everything from wool and crafts to meats, produce, cheeses, honey and all the things in between,” says Jennifer Williams with the market. “We have quite a few bakers as well.”

If shoppers cannot wait to savor the farm fresh products until you get home, “we have foods that you can very easily put together and have a little picnic in the park,” says Williams.

The vendors also accept households with Electronic Benefit Transfer, or EBT, cards.

“Purchases are automatically doubled so if you bring $25 on you automatically get $50 so you would have that availability of health and nutritious foods that are local,” Williams explains.

The cleanup will be in full force Saturday so the farmers market can open proudly on Sunday.
