Benjamin Moore has revealed its 2024 Color of the Year (COTY), and this time around it’s a bolt from the blue—or, more accurately, somewhere outside Earth’s atmosphere. Today in a live-streamed announcement, the paint company named Blue Nova 825—an enigmatic, violet-tinged azure—as the trending hue for the year ahead.

Where many paint companies have reached for the sky in their 2024 COTY bets (Sherwin-Williams, Valspar, and C2 Paints have all announced pale blues as their favored tints), Benjamin Moore is probing the heavens in its inspiration. The deep blue conjures shades found through the lens of a telescope, and the announcement, not coincidentally, took place at the orbital launch site of Blue Origin—the Jeff Bezos–founded space exploration company and defense contractor— in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

“Blue Nova—the winner, the star—was a color that really stood out to us. We just fell in love with the sumptuous quality, the intrigue, and it was balanced with this undercurrent of reassurance that we thought was really nice,” said Andrea Magno, the company’s director of color marketing and development, during the announcement. “It was the duality within the one color that made it feel really right for 2024.”

“It really is an eye-catching blue,” added Sharon Grech, a spokesperson from the company. “It’s a midtone hue. It’s not too dark; it’s not too light. So it really doesn’t just fall into the background, but rather it holds our attention with its personality.”

Blue Nova is a fitting successor to the paint giant’s 2023 Color of the Year, a zesty orange-red called Raspberry Blush. This year, though, cooler tones felt fitting, according to the experts. “There were a number of contenders [for the Color of the Year], and a lot of them, to start, fell to the warmer side of the color wheel. But it was the cooler colors that had this depth, that had this intrigue that we were really drawn to. We felt that it was the right color to bring to our customers,” Magno explained.

The duo suggested trying the color on its own in bedrooms and home offices to foster a sense of calm, or using it as a “launch pad” to go bolder with complementary hues like terra-cotta or a favorite neutral, per Magno.

In fact, Blue Nova is just one hue in a trendy 10-color palette that Benjamin Moore has suggested for the year ahead, including warmer shades like a pale yellow called Honeybee, an orange-tinted shade called Topaz, and a blush-kissed neutral called Pristine.

Blue Nova isn’t the final frontier for Benjamin Moore, however. According to the company, the announcement kicks off a design partnership with Blue Origin’s nonprofit, Club for the Future, which will involve design interventions at local hospitals and “space-themed experiences” at community events, in efforts to promote STEM fields.
