Beloved Vermont Ski Resort Provides Look At Vintage Trail Map

Trail maps are a vital piece of skiers' paraphernalia. They guide us through the mountains when cell service can't, remind us of the resorts we've patronized in the past, and facilitate the exploration of exciting new locales.

In short, to be a skier, or at least one that travels outside of their home turf, is to occasionally glance downwards on the chairlift, digesting a beautifully realized network of runs, lodges, and restaurants.

Yesterday, August 16th, Pico Mountain, Vermont, honored this long-standing tradition by sharing a classic 1976 trail map.

See it below.

In the caption to this post, Pico asked, "What can you spot that has since changed?"

A lot, it turns out. One commenter had just about every notable change dialed, writing:

"T-bars are gone, Lower Pike and Upper Pike chairlifts replaced by Golden Express and Summit Express lifts. The big rock on B slope is gone. Forty Niner trail added. Poma Lift added and is in ruins. Birch Glades Trail and Lift added and lift removed. Added Condos and Sports Complex. And most importantly added Pico Ski Club! Anything else?"

Other commenters jumped in to recall fond memories of seasons past at Pico, like one skier who "grew up at Pico, skiing and working there ( my Dad ran the Ski Shop, I worked in the Rental Shop)….I remember that map, brings back memories!"

I love that.

As we skiers age, it's not uncommon to move away from the resorts that initially nurtured our passion for snowsports.

But the memories we developed at these home hills will always remain and persist through the addition of new chairlifts, condos, and restaurants because we didn't initially show up for the amenities, we showed up for the skiing.

While I've never been to Pico, I'm sure it's a very special place.
