CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Every year, the Champaign Park District places different animated characters on its Kaufman Lake canoe. This year’s creation features some classic “Looney Tunes.”

The park district chose beloved cartoon characters Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck to sit on the canoe this summer.

This fun tradition has been going on for 10 years. Each spring, characters are hand-sketched, cut out on wood, and finally, painted.

“It’s something to inspire people to also canoe in the lake, and when you drive by, you smile and you get excited,” said Chelsea Norton, Champaign Park District’s Marketing and Development Director. “Our operations team — it’s their brainchild. And they’re the ones that, every winter, they do a new project every year to prepare the canoe.”

The park district hangs up each year’s different wooden characters at the Prairie Farm winter event.
