Beloved Pit Bull Rescued and Reunited With Family After Running Away From Dogsitter During Maui Wildfires

Many Hawaiians still await news of missing loved ones following the devastating Maui wildfires. Still, one family is counting their blessings for the safe return of their dog, Roman, on August 15.

@Rockykanaka posted that the Pit Bull was with a dog sitter when the fire came closer, and the sitter was forced to jump into the water for safety. Unfortunately, the dog did not jump but was later found, treated, and reunited with his ohana.

We're so happy for Roman and his family! This is a much-needed glimmer of joy and hope amid such tragedy. The sweet dog seems grateful to his rescuers and veterinary team, too, but the smile on his parents' faces in their family photo says it all.

The veterinarians, vet techs, and animal shelter workers are some of the most underappreciated heroes in Hawaii right now. The Maui Humane Society is caring for over 3 thousand pets who have been injured, lost, or displaced! Fortunately, some pets and owners have already been reunited. Others will remain apart until their owner has somewhere to stay, and some are still waiting to hear from their families.

For those who would like to help animals on the island, you can donate to the. Maui Humane Society through the shelter's website or Facebook fundraiser.

It's easy to get swept in by the immensity of the tragedy, but the stories with happy endings--like Roman's--are great reminders why these rescue efforts are so important. Reunited families make all the work worthwhile!

Roman's story is also an important reminder to microchip pets, when able. This will help shelter staff, police, or anyone official contact you in case your pet goes missing. It's a quick procedure, and some clinics will even provide this service for free. If you rescue a dog, a microchip is often included too.
