Beloved NYC cookie shop, Schmackary’s, opening San Diego bakery
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Schmackary’s, one of New York City’s beloved cookie shops, will soon be opening up an outpost in San Diego.
The bakery’s franchise partner, Fransmart, announced the expansion to America’s Finest City on Tuesday after completing an agreement with San Diego native, Sharian Lott. It will mark the first location of Schmackary’s to arrive on the West Coast since the bakery began franchising last year.
“I wanted to be a part of something that makes people happy,” Lott said in a release. “When I went to Schmackary’s, it reminded me of a neighborhood bakery in the small town where my mom grew up. It was an experience like no other.”
Schmackary’s first opened in NYC’s Theatre District back in 2012 by Zach Schmahl. Since then, the bakery’s “lip-schmackin’ good” cookies have become known as the “Official Cookie of Broadway.”

Lott herself and her family have a deep history with San Diego’s local theater community, as the daughter of Dorothy Smith, the first Black woman elected to office in San Diego who also served as a board member for one of the longest-running Black theater companies in the country. Lott is also the mother of Broadway actress, Loren Lott.
“I’ve supported my mom for so long. I’m proudly known as Dorothy’s daughter, or Loren’s mother,” she said. “Now, it’s my time to venture out on my own merits and serve my community. I want to create a place that brings happiness to all who enter. After all, who isn’t happy while eating the greatest cookie in the world?!”
A timeline for Schmackary’s arrival in San Diego has not been detailed and it is unclear where in the county the new bakery will be located. The first Schmackary’s outside Manhattan is set to open in New Jersey at some point this spring.
Nonetheless, Schmahl expressed excitement at the prospect of the cookie hotspot making its mark on San Diego’s food scene.
“To take Schmackary’s across the country less than a year after we started franchising just speaks to how our store can make an impact anywhere,” he said. “Sharian’s connection with San Diego adds a unique touch to our journey.”
