We live in confusing, tense, and sometimes scary times, so it’s more important than ever that we have open and intelligent dialogue about key issues. In the latest issue of Net-A-Porter’s Porter magazine, Bella Hadid reflects on her Muslim upbringing and reveals why religion is such an important facet of her life.

“My dad was a refugee when he first came to America, so [the travel ban] is actually very close to home for my sister and brother and me,” she said in the interview. “He was always religious, and he always prayed with us. I am proud to be a Muslim.”

We love that Hadid stands up for what she believes in, and it’s a reminder that everyone should be proud of their heritage. Our religion and belief systems contribute to who we are, and we’re all about celebrating family history with the ones we hold near and dear.

In the interview Hadid also talks about her battle with Lyme Disease, which she continues to raise awareness about in order to help others struggling with the condition. AND she opened up about being single — in the most refreshing way possible.

“I’m just really focusing on myself, and my work, and just being the best that I can be. I’m not really worried about what guys think about me, I’m just trying to be a woman!”
