Belinda Carlisle has been absent from the spotlight for some time—almost 25 years, in fact. Now, the former The Go-Go’s musician is making a return to the stage, announcing major career news and opening up about performing as an “older singer.” (And rocking blonde hair!)

Carlisle revealed that she is returning to pop music, and took to the stage in a stunning performance at A Capitol Fourth, a 4th of July celebration that took place in Washington, D.C. The performance came on the heels of the release of her new EP, Kismet, a five-song collaboration with tunesmith Diane Warren, that has already received enthusiastic praise.

Now at 64, the singer recalls the moment that turned her away from the music industry when she was in hear early 40s. “I was dropped by my record company when I turned 40 and singing was the only thing I really knew how to do,” she told People. “Of course I was mortified and panicking, but then I thought, ‘Well, who am I?’ It began like the most interesting part of my life—I’d always been defined by what I do, so I knew that there was more to that.”

Fans showered the star with love in the comments section of a recent Instagram post by the singer. Several commenters praised her new EP, one writing, “Amaaaaaaaazing show! You sound great, look fabulous, and the new material is fantastic! BRAVO!” Long-time fans shared their support, too. One devoted fan wrote: “Loved you on The Capital 4th PBS Special. A lot of great memories in your music. Saw The GO-GO’s twice❤️.”

Once lead vocalist for the all-female rock band The Go-Go’s before her successful solo career in the ‘80s and ‘90s, Carlisle never imagined stepping away from music, but she has no regrets about how her career panned out.

“I’ve been on a treadmill since I was pretty much 19 years old with The Go-Go’s and having to come up with hits and having to go on tour—it’s like your whole life is planned out for you a year at a time,” she told People. So when she reflected on the turning point of her musical life, she said, “What I thought at first was a disaster ended up being a huge gift.”

Despite not performing for nearly three decades, the singer’s voice remains in peak condition. Carlisle told People that she credits her top form to daily Pranayama breath work in conjunction with dedicated yoga practice.

“I’m an older singer now and I have to really do a lot of prep. It used to be that I took my voice for granted and I don’t at all anymore. I’m just really lucky that I’m still out there doing it, but I have to take care,” she said. “I mean, when I’m on the road, I travel with three humidifiers and I have all these rituals that I do just to keep my voice healthy when I’m working.”

Carlisle seems to have returned to pop music with a bang. We can’t wait to see what comes next for her!
