BEHR just released a list of their nationwide best-selling, non-neutral paint colors to cap off the year, and these 10 shades represent the biggest color trends of 2023—many of them expected to carry over into the new year.

The paint company's stats show that nine of their top 10 best-selling colors of 2023 were varying shades of blue, with the tenth color—a deep shade of green—as the one to break the pattern.

2023 saw slightly more colorful paint tones becoming the new "neutrals" for interior color palettes, and green and blue proved the most popular. Not only do these shades work for adding accents and highlights in all-neutral spaces, but they offer visual interest without overwhelming. Etched Glass, a practical shade of frosty blue that’s so light it almost qualifies as a neutral itself, earned the top spot.

“It appears consumers are channeling the beauty of the outdoors by integrating hues from nature into their home environment,” said Erika Woelfel, vice president of Color and Creative Services at Behr Paint, in a statement. “These warm earth tones and watery blues evoke feelings of warmth and comfort.”

With nearly every shade on the list being named for a nature theme—from elements like ice and fog to the Adirondacks themselves—it’s no surprise that the shades are inspired by various elements and color schemes found in nature.

Nature-inspired shades are a highly popular way to bring color into a space. Not only are they familiar and calming, but they also tend to be drawn from scenes the eye naturally finds pleasing. This means you don’t have to do any extra work to make the shade seem right at home under any aesthetic.

The full list of colors following Etched Glass includes Adirondack Blue, Swirling Water, Ice Sculpture, Half Sea Fog, Midnight Blue, Very Navy, Compass Blue, Teton Blue, and Vine Leaf.

The top five shades range from very light to mid-tone shades of blue, with Adirondack being the darkest shade. Each on the list is a grey-toned blue, with the lightest shade sitting in fourth place.

The latter half of the most popular shades are comprised of mostly dark tones. These especially fit into the moody trend of 2023, but there are many more accent options and full-color aesthetics perfect for deeper paint colors without changing the overall mood of the space. Navy blue makes an elegant choice, often used in combination with neutral color palettes or to add a relaxing, modern element.

The shade Vine Leaf takes the 10th spot, but it’s worth mentioning as the only color that isn’t blue. Interior design has seen green as a trending color, from kitchens to bedrooms, since the beginning of 2023, and it's not going anywhere in 2024. Deep, calming greens (think sage, moss, and, of course, Vine Leaf) are some of the most popular choices decorators use when going green.
