Deciding what color to paint the outside of your house or stain your deck is never an easy choice—but it just got a little bit simpler.

Behr Paint Company just named its second-ever Exterior Stain Color of the Year, a beautiful blend of muted brown and gray called Tugboat. The announcement was made in tandem with its Curb Appeal Collection, a collection that will ensure the exterior of your home looks good on the interior.

“Our 2024 Exterior Stain Color of the Year provides a new perspective on color for exterior wood stains, adding both character and freshness to projects,” Erika Woelfel, vice president of Color and Creative Services, said in a statement. “With a timeless finish, Tugboat’s versatile brownish gray color provides organic beauty to make any outdoor space feel like a safe harbor.”

Home Exteriors Made Simple

Behr asked around, and more than half of all Americans surveyed by the company said they found the thought of painting their home’s exterior to be stressful, while nearly a third said it would be easier to make color decisions if they could choose from a curated collection of exterior paints.

Maybe you’re struggling to find the perfect color for your entire house, or you just want to freshen up the trim or give your door an update—the opportunities to increase your home’s curb appeal with a quick coat of paint are endless.

“Painting your front door is one of my favorite beginner-friendly DIY projects for increasing your home’s curb appeal,” Behr Ambassador and interior designer, Cara Newhart, said.

Newhart recommends using the collection of colors to give your home's exterior a refresh or start small with projects like painting your planter boxes or mailboxes.

Newhart says when you’re looking for an exterior color palette, you’ll want to sample colors just like you would if you painted the inside of your home. If your house already has fixed elements like brick, stone, concrete, or wooden beams, draw from those to give your place a more coordinated and polished look—as will selecting one primary color and two secondary accent colors.

For instance, Newhart chose Behr’s Cracked Pepper as her home’s primary exterior color, but also recommends Adirondack Blue, Red Pepper, Dark Ash, and Charismatic.

“We recognized the challenge consumers are constantly facing when it comes to the color selection process—especially for exterior projects,” Andy Lopez, Behr's head of marketing, said in a statement. “By offering a collection of curated colors in a diverse product offering, we aim to provide consumers with the confidence they need to select a color and complete their exterior projects with ease.”

Behr’s trend palette takes the guesswork out of picking out the best color for your home. While you’re at it, give Tugboat a try—you can get it exclusively at The Home Depot.
