Get a Behind-the-Scenes Look at the New Downton Abbey Movie
We’ve been counting down the days until the new Downton Abbey movie premiere ever since it was officially announced last July. And even though the release date is finally within sight, we can hardly wait to reunite with the Crawleys.
If you can’t attend one of the advance screening parties next week (complete with costumes and a fancy menu!), you’ll have to wait until September 20 to see the full film. But luckily for us, Focus Features has given us something to hold us over until it’s time to head to the theater. We have a sneak peek at some of the movie, as well as some new behind-the-scenes shots of the making of the movie.
The film was primarily shot in London and at Highclere Castle in Hampshire (which was the main filming location for the television series, too). Filming began in September 2018 and was finished by the end of November. These newly-released images give us an insider look at what the cast and crew were up to during the making of this long-anticipated movie.

This selfie of Jim Carter, Raquel Cassidy, Kevin Doyle, Phyllis Logan, and Brendan Coyle might be our favorite behind-the-scenes photo from the Downton Abbey set. We’re positive these folks won’t be taking selfies in the actual film (it’s set in 1927), but we love to see the actors having fun at work.

Laura Carmichael and Maggie Smith—playing Lady Edith and Violet Crawley, respectively—take a stroll on the grounds followed closely by Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern, who play Robert and Cora Crawley. We don’t know specifically what’s going on in the scene, but it’s worth noting these characters are dressed quite nicely, so we’re guessing it’s not just a stroll around the mansion. Perhaps this is the visit from the Queen the trailer teases.

We’ve missed watching the Crawleys discuss important matters during meal times—and we can’t wait to find out what’s being discussed. Here Michelle Dockery, playing Lady Mary, sits at the breakfast table with Hugh Bonneville and Allen Leech, who play Hugh Bonneville and Tom Branson.

In this ballroom fit for a queen, Michelle Dockery, and Matthew Goode—also known as Lady Mary and Henry Talbot—take a twirl around the dance floor. Judging by the dresses and tiaras, this is an extremely fancy affair.
We're still counting down the minutes until the opening credits of the movie, and these sneak peeks have us so excited for what's to come. While you wait, read up on the Downton Abbey historical inaccuracies you probably missed—some of them might surprise you.
