Julianne Hough

Admit it. The fashion is as much a part of the lure of Dancing with the Stars as is the performances, and this season has seen a bonanza of style as set by co-host Julianne Hough, who brings her own individual taste to each week’s theme.

“When I found out I would be returning for this season of Dancing with the Stars as co-host, I was so excited to showcase my personal style and creative vision each week,” she exclusively tells Parade. “After being on this show for so many years, my style has evolved so much.”

Julianne began as a professional dancer on the show—winning two MirrorBall Trophies, segued to the judge's panel, and is now co-host, so she has spent a lot of time in the ballroom and knows what works and what doesn’t, and this season, she’s getting assistance from her personal stylist Jennifer Mazur.

“We have been able to take the high energy, glamorous elements of this show and bring a sophisticated chic, high fashion vibe to it,” she continues. “That is where Jen has such a specific eye and taste—in working with designers like Valentino, Saint Laurent and Brandon Maxwell, as well as up and coming designers. She is able to create and pull together looks that really resonate with me personally, by showcasing more of a fashion vibe while still reflecting the glitz and glamour of the ballroom. From themed nights to elegant classics, it’s been such a joy to collaborate with my team and tap into my passion and love for fashion. I’m excited for everyone to see what we have in store for the rest of the season.”

Love the looks? We also had the opportunity to speak with Julianne's stylist Jennifer Mazur about what goes into creating Julianne's looks each week. Read on as she gives us a peek into how she gets Julianne camera ready.

What does Julianne look for when she's getting dressed each week for DWTS?

For each week of DWTS, we look to create very elevated, high-fashion looks for Julianne that speak more to her authentic identity rather than focusing on costume-themed. The goal for our looks each week is to use this opportunity to continue to establish Julianne’s presence in the fashion community, by styling her with elegant looks that still resonate with the DWTS community.

How do you come up with related looks for theme nights?

I was given the themes for the entire DWTS season two weeks before the show started and dedicated a week to dive into each theme by researching, looking at runway shows, fashion week, and different designer collections to pull inspiration. For Disney100 Night, I knew I wanted Julianne to be a high-fashion Disney princess. Once I started to research clothing, I was inspired by all of the blush colors and once I saw this gorgeous pink skirt, it all fell into place for her to be Aurora/Sleeping Beauty. I immediately knew I wanted to add white diamonds, a crown, opera-length gloves, finished off with the classic long wavy blonde hair.

For the Halloween episode, Julianne wore an Elie Saab runway look with hair and makeup inspired by the Rodarte Fall collection.

Does she have any special concerns for her wardrobe?

What I love is that Julianne is really willing to take risks with her wardrobe. Whether that is being playful with the clothes or experimental with the hair and makeup, we always want to be as creative as possible while remaining tasteful and elegant.

Is there a style of dress that she prefers?

Julianne is really open and versatile in her style – whether it be a cool neutral look or fun pop of color, she is always open to experiment! She loves a great pantsuit and is always happy when we can find ways to integrate them while adding a bit of her personal flare, too. Additionally, Julianne is a big collector of shoes, bags, and accessories, so it’s always fun to play with those items to complete and elevate her look.

Some of Julianne’s favorite designers include Khaite, Dior, and Valentino to name a few. She also really loves working with unknown and up-and-coming designers. Whenever I work with Julianne, I always try and focus on what will make her look and feel the most beautiful.

How do you collaborate?

Julianne is very open and trusting in my decision-making process. She gives me the space and freedom to go in whatever direction I think is best, which is the best thing a stylist can ask for. It gives me the confidence to know that whichever way I decide to go with her look, she’s going to be happy. I also love the collaboration with Julianne and welcome any ideas she proposes – it makes this process so creative and fun!

Standing on her feet for two hours, how much is comfort a concern when it comes to shoes? Is it comfort vs. style? Does she provide her own shoes? Favorite brand?

Julianne loves to play with shoes and isn’t afraid to wear a kitten heel, which is rare. Based on what will best complete the look, she is willing to push the envelope and go in a direction that may seem unexpected. She prioritizes style over comfort. Her favorite shoe brand is by far Khaite -- I think she has over 30 pairs!

Does she get to keep her wardrobe?

She doesn’t get to keep the looks from the show but being able to have an archive of photos and memories is so much fun to look back on. I am grateful to be a part of this process, and that I’m able to pull some fabulous looks for her so far with more surprises to come.
