We all have different bedtime rituals that help set us up for a successful eight hours of zzzz’s (or ten, if we’re feeling indulgent). From lighting the perfect mood-boosting candle to ASMR videos that scratch your brain in just the right way, winding down for bedtime can look different for everyone. One thing that definitely doesn’t do it for us, though? An uncomfortable, overstimulating, and, frankly, boring AF bedroom.

This year, we’re challenging you to give your snooze zone a little TLC—after all, we spend over half our lives in bed, so you deserve a place that checks off every relaxation/intimacy/inspirational box on your list. To help you wade through the deluge of design options out there, we’re rounding up seven of the year’s hottest bedroom trends (the decor kind, natch) to bring you the colors, accents, and accessories that will help you transform a ho-hum bedroom into your very own dreamland.

The Trend: Paint That Feels Like a Hug

Paint can have a transformative power in your bedroom, and this year it’s all about embracing hues that feel akin to enveloping yourself in the best-ever hug. Think: the creamy ecru of oatmeal, the cozy brown of that Jenni Kayne sweater (you know the one), or the rich burgundy of your favorite California red blend. “I always encourage my clients not to overlook the power of paint,” says Chloe Mackintosh, designer and founder of Boxwood Avenue. “Opting for a saturated neutral like Farrow & Ball’s Mouse’s Back can really make a space feel like a true sanctuary.”

“In 2022 we saw a bunch of darker browns and purple ones start to make their way into spaces and now I think variations of red will be a high priority,” adds Drew Scott, designer and founder of Lone Fox. “If you were to ask me three years ago what color I would never use in a space, it would have been red. I always found it to be such a challenging color to design with, but lately, it’s been feeling welcoming. I think we will see a lot of it in bedrooms this year, along with browns, ambers, and greens.”

The Trend: A Totally Extra Bed

This year, bedding is bigger and better than ever, with piles of pillows and cloud-like comforters creating the ultimate place for you to starfish to sleep or cozy up for cuffing season. Embrace a more is more ethos by indulging in a new bed set, extra throw pillows, or a pile of blankets to up the plushness of your bed. “Investing in quality bedding, mattress, and pillows allows you to recharge and restore yourself each night, allowing you to bring the best version of yourself into the world,” says Mackintosh.

The Trend: Vintage Treasures

If a trip to your local flea (or a trolling sesh on Facebook marketplace) is your idea of the perfect Sunday afternoon, this next trend is for you. Vintage treasures have had a renaissance in a big way over the past few years, and they’re showing no signs of slowing down. “A lot of people, including myself, are buying vintage or second-hand pieces for their home,” says Scott. “Not only is it sustainable, but the pieces are usually of amazing quality, thus being able to endure use and increase in value over time. Each piece adds so much character and life, and most of the time they are a treasure hunt to search for, which is always fun.” If the idea of sleeping in someone’s old queen bed weirds you out, opt instead for a gorgeous pair of nightstands or a multi-purpose wardrobe to add a bit of history to your bedroom.

The Trend: Holistic Touches

Ultimately, most of us want our bedrooms to be a place where we can decompress at the end of the day—shake off the stress from work, scroll through our FYP without judgment, and maybe sneak in a meditation or two. To facilitate a zen-like atmosphere, bedrooms are getting just a bit more blissed out this year. Round out your wellness routine with a few holistic touches in your bedroom, like an essential oil diffuser to help target your anxiety, a piece of art with your favorite mantra, a chic stack of meditation pillows, or a Himalayan salt lamp.

The Trend: Plenty of Patterns

Obsessed with patterns? Same. And we have good news—you’re going to be one very happy renter this year because pattern is everywhere. From cheery block prints to frilly florals that would make your nana proud (uh, don’t we all want that?), the latest iteration of pattern at home is playful and plentiful. To get your bedroom in on the trend while still maintaining a ~relaxed~ vibe, add a print in a flexible but impactful spot, like curtains or a quilted throw. “People are packing away the basic bedding to embrace pattern and texture,” says Scott. “This trend plays back to the vintage/heirloom trend in how people are embracing an “older” look throughout their spaces with vintage and antique pieces—think grandma’s bed, but 2023, ya know? Swapping bedding is an impactful way to restyle a room without doing a complete makeover as the bed is almost always the focal point.”

The Trend: Luxe, Layered Windows

Any designer will tell you, one of the best things you can splurge on for your space is window treatments. There’s just something about a luxe set of drapes that immediately levels up the style quotient of a room, taking your bedroom from college dorm to chic escape. And with so many close-to-custom drapery brands out there, achieving a timeless yet oh-so-now look is easier (and a bit more affordable) than ever. As you’re putting the finishing touches on your bedroom this year, spring for a lush pair of patterned pinch-pleat curtains, or add a fun ball fringe to your existing set. Who knows—the darkness they grant may even score you a bit of extra shut-eye.

The Trend: Mood Lighting

If you’ve ever walked into a hotel room or swanky restaurant that just felt capital-C Cozy, chances are there was some lighting magic at play. Turn off the overhead light and instead curate a lighting landscape that feels like a warm embrace (and acts as an IRL filter) with bitsy table lamps, glowing string lights, and more. “Having multiple light sources is a wonderful and inexpensive way to add a sense of calm to your space,” says Mackintosh. “Using petite lamps to illuminate the different corners of the bedroom with a soft warm light will make your space feel extra cozy.”
