Is a BedJet Worth It? My Honest ReviewCountry Living/Katie Bowlby

As a 44-year-old woman who lives in Alabama, it's safe to say I'm a hot sleeper. I've tried everything from cooling comforters and cooling sheets to sweat-wicking pajamas and still wake up in the middle of the night sweaty. When it came time to test out the BedJet, an air-based heating and cooling system, I was first in line.

We all know there's nothing more important than a good night's sleep, and your bedroom climate can play an important role in that. According to The National Sleep Foundation, the ideal temperature for sleep is between 60 and 67 degrees. Studies have shown a direct correlation between elevated temperatures and fatigue, according to the National Library of Medicine. While a BedJet is an investment, it can be worth it if it helps you sleep better.

After a KickStarter campaign, the company got its start on Shark Tank almost 10 years ago, but none of the Sharks invested in the product. Still, the company has become a success, thanks to a deal with MattressFirm. The device, now on Amazon, is on its third iteration (and even offers an aromatherapy add-on), and the company also sells an adjustable mattress frame.

BedJet is basically a heater and air conditioner for your bed. When I took it out of the box, I found the large white BedJet device, plus the extendable hose that attaches to your mattress. After reading the instructions, I had it all set up within a few minutes.

The biggest challenge for me was deciding where to put it. The BedJet 3 requires 6 inches of clearance under the bed, and it fits under all three beds in my house (both platform-style beds and traditional beds with a box spring). Still, it needs to be within range of an outlet. In my bedroom, the best spot was at the foot of the bed on the side that I sleep on. This wouldn't work if you have a footboard on your bed, but I sleep on a platform bed with a memory foam mattress.

The device is meant to work with your own bedding, so I set it up using my cooling comforter. I also tried the BedJet with a heavier quilt, and both worked well (personally, I prefer it paired with a cooling blanket). BedJet warns that the airflow might not work as effectively with "excessively heavy bedding," but I didn't find that to be an issue.

Once the unit is plugged in, it's really a matter of choosing heat or cool and turning it on. BedJet3 is controlled by either an app or a remote control. The BedJet website sells an app-only version for $40 less than the model that comes with a remote. Both are easy to use.

How I Tested the BedJet 3

After the quick set-up process, it was easy to check out the different options. I've used both the heating and cooling features. During some unseasonably cool spring days, the heating function created a cozy environment for curling up with a book and solved my husband's cold feet when he first got into bed. But for sleeping, it's all about the cooling function.

The effect is immediate, and I have been sleeping much more comfortably using the BedJet3. It's basically like sleeping with a fan blowing directly on you, but still keeping your bedding in tact. After using it for several weeks, I am not waking up with frequent night sweats and sleeping more soundly.

The device offers a customizable biorhythm feature. You can manually set up the cycle or let the app do it for you after you provide answers to a few simple questions (age, gender, if you're typically a hot or cold sleeper, and if you're using the Cloud Sheet). Mine starts with a blast of hot air before a transition to cool that runs for the rest of the night.

BedJet 3 Pros

  • Instant cooling and heating

  • More comfortable sleep

  • Easy-to-use app

  • Biorhythm feature

What to Consider Before Buying a BedJet3

Before you spend more than $400 on a device, think through these factors.

  • Your sleeping arrangements: This may seem obvious, but do you share a bed with another person? He or she may not be interested in sleeping with the same temperature control you prefer. (BedJet does offer a solution for that. More below.)

  • Does a pet sleep with you? When I first set up the device, my dog Smith hopped on the bed and plopped his head down right on the BedJet nozzle. He has other options for sleeping, but if your pet shares your bed, take that into consideration, at least when it comes to placement.

  • Aesthetics: There's no way around it—the BedJet isn't the most attractive piece of equipment. It's a large white box (15.5 x 10.5 x 6 inches) with a white tube that resembles a dryer vent coming out of it. Think through where you will put it and how it will look before making the purchase.

  • Do you need the BedJet3 Dual Zone? If you and your partner have very different sleeping habits, this might be the solution for you. But it comes at a much heftier price tag (over $1,000 on Amazon). The BedJet3 Dual Zone allows the two sides of the bed to have completely different temperatures, thanks to two BedJet3 devices, two remotes, and a special divided Cloud Sheet.

  • Do you need a Cloud Sheet? BedJet sells a special sheet designed to work with its devices. The Cloud Sheet is a two-layer top sheet. There are holes around the edges, sealed with snaps, that allow you to insert the nozzle into the sheet, creating a pillow of air. You then top it with your regular bedding. It's a nice addition but I didn't find it to be necessary. I'd recommend trying the BedJet alone before spending an extra $140 on a sheet.

  • Do you use a body pillow? My husband sleeps with a body pillow. With the placement of my BedJet unit, the body pillow acts as a barrier for the air flow. Just another factor to consider before purchasing!
