Buying a mattress shouldn’t be hard. But, honestly, it kind of is. Between all the sleep science techno-speak and gimmicky sales jargon, it’s difficult to know what’s actually worth paying more for, and what’s just pure marketing. Then, there’s the whole matter of figuring out where to buy your mattress from. Should you buy online or in-store? What about delivery and setup costs? Is it worth paying for the extended warranty? Never fear, gents. We’re here to help.

Read more: How Men's Health Tests Products

Our staff here at Men’s Health is as enthusiastic about sleep as we are about everything else in life. Over the years, our team has bought mattresses from just about every online mattress store that’s worth shopping. From obvious retailers like Amazon and Walmart to well-known bed-in-a-box brands like Casper and Tuft & Needle, to uber-luxe mattress providers (we’re looking at you, Tempur-Pedic and Avocado), we’ve bought mattresses from them all. These are our picks for the very best places to buy a mattress in 2024.

Which Is the Best Place to Buy a Mattress?

We’ve tested dozens of mattresses and dozens of mattress stores over the years. We can safely say that not all mattress retailers are created equal. But the one shop that stands out above them all is Saatva. Our editors and writers not only love the brand’s mattresses, but the shopping experience is second to none. The site is one of the few to offer free white glove delivery and setup, so you don’t have to lift a finger when your new mattress arrives. Plus, its 365-night in-home sleep trial and lifetime warranty are among the best in the industry.

Saatva

Delivery: Free white glove delivery and setup | Trial: 365 nights | Warranty: Lifetime

Year after year, Saatva has been a go-to favorite bedding shop of our team at Men's Health. We love the wide range of mattress types, including memory foam, hybrid, and even latex, so it's easy to find something for every type of sleeper. We've tested a handful of the brand's mattresses and loved them all. The Saatva Classic, in particular, is the company's best-seller, and it's no surprise. The luxury innerspring model is available in three firmness levels and two heights (choose 11.5" or 14.5"). At roughly $1,700 on sale, it's also reasonably priced, falling right in the middle of our picks for the best mattresses.

A few things stand out for Saatva. First, unlike most online mattress stores, customers can try out their mattresses in person at one of a dozen showrooms around the United States. If you're keen to do the whole process online, they have you covered too. Second, the company's 365-night in-home sleep trial is the longest of any company we're aware of. Plus, the lifetime warranty means you literally covered for the life of your mattress (less a $149 processing fee after year three). Bonus: Free white glove delivery and setup are included!

What do buyers say? "It's a wonderful feeling to know that you're not getting a mass-produced product delivered to your doorstep, and it's a bigger relief that this level of service won't run you in the five-digit price range," says Isis Briones, our expert who conducted our in-depth Saatva mattress review.

Tuft & Needle

Delivery: Free with free returns | Trial: 100 nights | Warranty: 10 years

As one of the OG bed-in-a-box brands, Tuft & Needle has been a long-time favorite of ours. The big win for T&N is its comfort/quality-to-price ratio. It makes some of the comfiest sub-$800 (with even better prices on sale) mattresses we've ever tested. It also keeps things simple with just three mattress models: T&N Original (foam), T&N Mint (foam), and the T&N Mint Hybrid (with a hybrid innerspring-meets-foam construction). Each model is made with a just-right medium-ish firmness that's designed to please just about every brand of sleeper, from back to side to stomach.

If you'd like to test out T&N's mattresses, it offers eight in-person stores in major cities across the U.S. But we can absolutely recommend buying online if that's your jam. The 100-night sleep trial and 10-year limited warranty are solid extras for a Queen-sized mattress that checks in under $900. Plus: Free delivery and free returns!

What do buyers say? "My girlfriend and I have slept on a T&N Original for years, and it's hands-down the most comfortable mattress we've ever owned. Shopping through Tuft & Needle was ridiculously easy, and our mattress arrived in just a few days. Plus, the bed-in-a-box setup took less than 10 minutes," says Mike Richard, an MH writer.

Leesa

Delivery: Free | Trial: 100 nights | Warranty: 10 years

Leesa leans hard on the hybrid mattress design, and we're here for it. The online retailer offers a good selection—seven in total—of high-quality hybrid models, plus a few pure foam models too. All are designed to provide a good blend of comfort, support, and responsiveness, while several offer extra cooling layers and built-in tech to encourage better airflow—perfect for hot sleepers. If sleeping au natural is your thing, the aptly named Natural Hybrid Mattress is made from breathable organic cotton, moisture-wicking wool, and soft, buoyant Talalay latex.

With prices starting around $1,500 retail for its hybrid mattresses, Leesa isn't the most affordable brand. But it's not the most expensive either. Given the quality of its mattresses, the wide selection, and the free delivery, 100-night trial, and decent 10-year warranty, we think it's still one of the best places to buy a mattress in 2024.

What do buyers say? "This is my third time going with Leesa. You simply can’t go wrong. Their support team is always a joy to work with and they’ve always helped to solve our problems and answer questions," says one reviewer from leesa.com.

<p><a href="https://go.redirectingat.com?id=74968X1596630&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.leesa.com%2F&sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.menshealth.com%2Ftechnology-gear%2Fg46872151%2Fbest-place-to-buy-a-mattress%2F" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Shop Now;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link ">Shop Now</a></p><p>Leesa</p><span class="copyright">Courtesy of Retailer</span>

Casper

Delivery: Free | Trial: 100 nights | Warranty: 10 years

Another OG in the mattress-in-a-box space, Casper has been a MH favorite for years. Every mattress in its lineup is ultra-comfortable, with great support and a design that works to keep your spine aligned while you sleep. The company also bakes some of the world's best cooling tech into every model. So, if you're a hot sleeper, this might be the mattress brand for you.

We also love the durability of Casper mattresses, as they're known to last longer than most on the market. The trade-off? You'll pay handsomely for that premium, high-quality construction. While some of the brand's value mattresses check in at around $1,000, the rest are priced at $1,500 and up. Its flagship Wave Hybrid Snow Mattress retails for $3,595. But at least the free delivery and 100-night sleep trial sweetens the deal. Plus, Casper backs everything with a 10-year warranty.

What do buyers say? "My lower back issues have subsided, and feel great rolling out of bed. I would recommend this mattress for athletes as I am often sore from long swim or bike workouts and feel rested in the morning," says one Casper Hybrid Wave Snow reviewer at casper.com.

<p><a href="https://go.redirectingat.com?id=74968X1596630&url=https%3A%2F%2Fcasper.com%2F&sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.menshealth.com%2Ftechnology-gear%2Fg46872151%2Fbest-place-to-buy-a-mattress%2F" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Shop Now;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link ">Shop Now</a></p><p>Casper</p><span class="copyright">Courtesy of Retailer</span>

Avocado

Delivery: Free | Trial: 1 year | Warranty: 25 years

Mattresses, especially low-quality foam mattresses, tend to rely on cheap design materials, some of which can be downright toxic. Not so with Avocado. The premium mattress brand makes some of the world's greenest mattresses with a combination of certified organic cotton, wool, and latex materials. No funky flame retardants, fiberglass, or other weird chemicals here. They even make vegan mattresses (the only one we're aware of on the market) if that's your thing.

There's really nothing we don't like about Avocado. It's easily one of the best places to buy a mattress, especially considering the industry-leading 1-year trial period and 25-year warranty. Not surprisingly, delivery is free. While some of its mattresses are priced at close to $2,000, its Eco Organic Mattress is just $1,169 for a queen. It's not "cheap" compared to most typical bed-in-a-box options, but it's a downright steal when you consider that it's made with the highest-quality organic materials.

What do buyers say? "I loved it since day 1. It has a completely different feeling than a traditional mattress or a memory foam mattress. I sleep on my side, and it’s very comfortable, no body aches and I sleep longer without a need to keep turning," says one Avocado Green Mattress reviewer at avocadogreenmattress.com.

<p><a href="https://go.redirectingat.com?id=74968X1596630&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.avocadogreenmattress.com%2F&sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.menshealth.com%2Ftechnology-gear%2Fg46872151%2Fbest-place-to-buy-a-mattress%2F" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Shop Now;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link ">Shop Now</a></p><p>Avocado</p><span class="copyright">Courtesy of Retailer</span>

Purple

Delivery: Free, plus free returns | Trial: 100 nights | Warranty: 10 years

There are plenty of great foam mattresses on the market. But Purple stands out for its own GelFlex Grid. It's a proprietary layer designed to gently cradle sensitive areas like your hips and shoulders while keeping the rest of your body aligned for ergonomic sleep. This grid layer boasts more than 20 patents and has been used in the mattresses of critical care patients in hospitals for as many years. We can vouch for it being the real deal, so if you're looking for the perfect blend of support and responsiveness, this is it.

Like many of the best places to buy a mattress this year, Purple offers a 100-night in-home sleep trial, plus a 10-year warranty, so you know they stand behind their products. What's more: Free delivery and free returns. So, even if you can't test out your new mattress in-store, buying a Purple mattress is risk-free. Some of the brand's mattresses can be pricey, like the uber-luxe Purple RejuvenatePremier Mattress that tops out at more than $7,000 (!). But, the company does offer several value-priced mattresses at well under $2,000, too.

What do buyers say? "I was extremely hesitant to buy this mattress because of the price, but after two months of having the RestorePlus mattress, I am SO happy I decided to buy! I have never had a more comfortable mattress in my life that cradles exactly where it needs to,"says one Purple RestorePlus Hybrid reviewer at purple.com.

Bear

Delivery: Free, plus free returns | Trial: 120 nights | Warranty: Lifetime

You really can score a good quality mattress for less than $1,000 and even under $700 if you know where to shop. Case in point: Bear's Original. It's one of our favorite memory foam mattresses at this price point because of its versatile, all-around design. But, Bear offers a great selection of hybrid mattresses as well, so you can get the best of both worlds with a combination of innerspring and memory foam construction.

What sets Bear apart, though, is that it also offers better customer service and post-purchase care than most. Shipping is free, and returns are too. Plus, the 120-night in-home trial is better than the standard 90- to 100-night term of most of its competitors. Add to that a lifetime warranty, and any of the mattresses in their line-up feel like a steal.

What do buyers say? "My girlfriend and I have been sleeping on the Elite Hybrid for the last year and we absolutely love it. We're both 'combo' sleepers, meaning we tend to move between our sides and backs throughout the night, and it's sooo comfy in either position," says Mike Richard, an MH Writer.

Tempur-Pedic

Delivery: Free | Trial: 90 nights| Warranty: 10 years

Of course, if "only the best will do," look no further than Tempur-Pedic. The OG luxury bed brand is the real deal with some of the most premium, highest-quality mattresses on the market. It's proprietary TP foam is durable, supportive, and responsive—all must-have features if you're someone who suffers from back, neck, or chronic pain. The brand's cooling sleep tech is as good as it gets, too. So, if you run hot at night, this is probably the best mattress for you.

Tempur-Pedic is easily one of the best places to buy a mattress. Not surprisingly, it's also one of the most expensive. Expect to pay north of $2,000 for almost any mattress in its catalog. But that's the price of admission for a virtual guarantee that you'll have some of the best night's sleep of your life. Plus, you'll get free delivery (even white glove delivery with some mattress purchases) and a 90-night sleep trial with a 10-year warranty. So there's that.

What do buyers say? "Need firm mattress due to back issues. Was concerned about comfort, but this mattress is very comfortable and supports perfectly," says one TEMPUR-Adapt reviewer at tempurpedic.com.

<p><a href="https://go.redirectingat.com?id=74968X1596630&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tempurpedic.com%2F&sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.menshealth.com%2Ftechnology-gear%2Fg46872151%2Fbest-place-to-buy-a-mattress%2F" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Shop Now;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link ">Shop Now</a></p><p>Tempur-Pedic</p><span class="copyright">Courtesy of Retailer</span>

Amazon

Delivery: Typically free | Trial: Varies | Warranty: Varies

Amazon might seem like an obvious choice but with good reason. While most mattress stores—even the very best online mattress stores—offer a dozen or so models, the online giant has hundreds of mattresses available. You'll find mattresses from major brands like Casper, Simmons, Leesa, Tempur-Pedic, and more. Plus, it's easy to narrow down your search by bed size, height, firmness level, mattress type, and more. You'll also find some of the best mattress deals here, too, with bargain-basement mattresses available for less than $200 (seriously).

The catch (if you can call it that) is that the exact trial and warranty terms are usually up to the individual brand backing each mattress. Typically, you get what you pay for, so a $300 mattress might not come with any sleep trial and a very limited warranty. The good news is that most mattresses on Amazon ship free, especially for Amazon Prime members, with free returns, too! Just be sure to check the fine print.

What do buyers say? "I bought a car camping mattress and a mattress for our guest room on Amazon. I was thrilled with both and they were ridiculously cheap! Delivery was free, and the whole buying process was hassle-free too." says Mike Richard, an MH Writer.

Walmart

Delivery: Typically free | Trial: Varies | Warranty: Varies

If you're looking for the absolute cheapest mattress you can find, we feel you. Maybe you're shopping for a kid's room or a guest room or looking to furnish an Airbnb rental. Whatever the reason, you can find what you're looking for at Walmart. The online mega-retailer offers some of the best prices on everything, of course, and that includes mattresses. The Walmart-exclusive Allswell Luxe 12" mattress, in particular, has been a favorite of ours for its solid value. The 12-inch height is thicker than most mattresses at this crazy affordable price point, plus it offers solid support, comfort, and responsiveness.

Like Amazon, Walmart offers hundreds of mattress models and brands. Most are available with free delivery, and free returns are available to most stores. The only rub is that you'll want to double-check the sleep trial and warranty terms before buying. In most cases, they vary based on the brand or manufacturer of the mattress you're buying. Still, at less than $400 for a queen-sized mattress, can you really complain?

What do buyers say? "I bought an Allswell mattress for a temporary living situation in Nashville, TN. I enjoy how easy the delivery process was, and the comfort of the mattress definitely exceeded its super-affordable price," says John Thompson, Senior Gear and Commerce Editor for MH.

What Is a Reasonable Price for a Good Mattress?

As with most things, the short answer is: It depends. In our experience, you don’t necessarily have to spend $3,000 or more for a guarantee of a good night’s sleep; but any of the mattresses we recommend above that are between $1,000 and $3,000 go above and beyond on comfort and satisfaction.

The truth is you can really find a good quality queen-sized mattress for under $1,000, though, and sometimes even less than $800 if you’re willing to forego extras like fancy cooling materials or organic textiles. This is especially true if you’re shopping budget-friendly bed-in-a-box brands like Tuft & Needle, who offer several models on the cheap.

A mattress under $500 is typically only worth looking into for short-term situations, or for guest rooms or vacation homes (situations where someone won't be sleeping on it every single night).

Is It Worth It to Buy a Mattress Online?

If you know your sleeping position and understand the basics about the different types of mattresses (foam, innerspring, hybrid), then buying a mattress online is definitely worth it.

Buying a mattress online saves time and eliminates the chances of you actually having to pack a bed up in your car and take it home. Some online mattress stores will bring the bed into your home and set it up (and they'll even dispose of your current bed). Another cool thing about buying a mattress online? If you don't like it and are within the warranty period, most companies will come and pick the bed up for you too.

How to Find the Best Mattress Online

There are a few things to consider when you look at top-rated mattresses. Do you sleep better on a firmer mattress or one that’s got a little bounce? Do you have special wants, such as a mattress to help alleviate occasional back pain? Do you sleep hot? We’ve got all the answers right here. Let’s start with the basics.

Mattress Type and Material

There are, generally, three different types of mattresses: foam (including memory foam) mattresses, innerspring mattresses, and a hybrid of the two. In general, foam mattresses tend to be a little firmer, innerspring models a little bouncier, and hybrid mattresses fall somewhere in the middle.

  • Innerspring mattresses: No matter which type of mattress you choose, almost all are made with two separate sections. The first is a support core or base that serves as the "foundation" for the rest of the mattress. Atop that is a second, softer comfort section that's typically made with materials that are more plush, more responsive, and more comfortable than those in the core. Innerspring mattresses are unique in that they rely on rows of metal coils to provide a strong, durable base. The comfort layers in an innerspring mattress are typically no more than two inches thick (any thicker, and they're usually considered a hybrid mattress).

  • Foam/memory mattresses: Foam (including memory foam) mattresses rely on layers of foam throughout the construction, including the support core. Instead of metal coils, they use high-density foam as the base of the entire mattress. This is usually topped with additional layers of memory foam. The best memory foam mattresses are soft yet supportive, and made to naturally contour to your body's size and shape. This results in a more "body-hugging" feel than traditional innerspring mattresses. Although, in lower-quality memory foam mattresses, that "contouring" can lead to a feeling of sleeping in rather than on the mattress. Whether that's a good thing or not is a matter of personal preference.

  • Hybrid mattresses: As the name implies, hybrid mattresses combine an innerspring coil support base with a thick memory foam comfort layer. In the best hybrid mattresses, the result is a "best of both worlds" mattress that's extremely supportive and contouring enough to please a wide range of sleep styles and preferences.

These days, memory foam mattresses have largely overtaken innerspring mattresses as the sleep surface of choice. But, hybrid models that combine memory foam and innerspring construction are fast gaining in popularity. They offer the support and rigidity of a traditional mattress with the plushness, comfort, and temperature-regulating properties of memory foam. Again, it’s all a matter of personal preference, so there really is no one “best” type of mattress. It's all about what's best for you.

Temperature Regulation

The best mattresses provide solid temperature regulation, which is especially important for "hot" sleepers. The most premium quality models feature memory foam top layers designed to draw heat away from the body so you stay cool and comfortable all night long.

Motion Isolation

For couples where one or both partners toss and turn during the night, that motion/vibration can be a real problem. Look for a mattress with solid motion isolation that allows each partner to flip and flop all night long without disturbing their significant other. The best way to test this out, of course, is to do so in person.

In-Home Sleep Trial

It's best to shop in person whenever possible. If you can't or just don't want to, be sure to shop mattress brands with a solid in-home sleep trial of at least 90 nights. Three months is plenty of time to test out a new mattress in your own home to make sure it'll work for you. Check the fine print, too, to confirm what fees are involved with returning your mattress after the trial. Some brands and retailers offer free shipping but not free returns, and some charge additional return/restocking fees that can add up to hundreds of dollars.

Warranty

Any mattress worth buying should come with a minimum 10-year warranty. The best online mattress brands even offer 25-year or lifetime warranties, so you know they really stand behind their products.

Budget

The best mattresses (from the likes of Tempur-Pedic and Purple) often require a significant investment, with some priced at four to five thousand dollars or more. But the truth is you don't have to spend that much. If budget is your main concern, start by shopping for mattresses in your price range. There are a variety of great mattress options starting at less than $500 delivered.

How We Selected

For the past three years, a suite of Men's Health editors and writers tried and tested over 50 mattresses, from a handful of different online stores. We put our beds through the wringer, evaluating each one on support, comfort, durability, and assembly time. We also considered price point, as some mattresses provide a better overall value than others. Ultimately, we agreed on the list above of our picks for the best places to buy our favorite mattresses right now in 2024.
