The royals haven’t officially responded to the many, many, many, maaaaany claims in Prince Harry’s best-selling memoir, Spare, but apparently they could take a major swipe at the Sussexes by stripping them of their titles.

A royal source told Us Weekly, “There’s a very real decision to be made, of course, with respect to whether or not the Sussexes get to keep their titles.” The source added, “The way to strike back would be to approve a measure whereby Harry and Meghan are stripped of their titles, and that’s a very real possibility—certainly if the toxicity doesn’t eventually subside.”

That said, there’s also a “strong belief” among the royals that the “best form of getting even or negating the Sussexes is to continue to ignore them and not feed into their drama and incessant attention-seeking.”

Harry and Meghan were named Duke and Duchess of Sussex on May 19, 2018 (the morning of their wedding), when the royals put out this statement:

“The Queen has today been pleased to confer a dukedom on Prince Henry of Wales. His titles will be Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton, and Baron Kilkeel. Prince Harry thus becomes His Royal Highness the Duke of Sussex, and Ms. Meghan Markle on marriage will become Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Sussex.”

After they stepped down as senior working royals, the Palace released another statement, saying, “The Sussexes will not use their HRH titles as they are no longer working members of the royal family.” Meaning, they were still the Duke and Duchess of Sussex but could no longer be addressed as “His/Her Royal Highness.”

Anderson Cooper actually asked Prince Harry why he and Meghan hadn’t voluntarily given up the titles during their 60 Minutes interview, saying, “Why not renounce your titles as duke and duchess?” In response, Harry shot back, “And what difference would that make?”

I mean…fair enough!
