Beckley hosts National Day of Prayer event

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — May 2nd marks the National Day of Prayer across the country. Beckley has hosted its own version of the event for over a decade.

Word Park was filled with voices lifted in prayer and worship as the gazebo played host to thirty churches from around the community.

Beckley has hosted a National Day of Prayer event since 2011, though Covid forced organizers to change the event from a full 24 hours to 12 hours.

Jill Moorefield, Director of Beckley Events, has attended several of the events over the years and says that the sense of community is strong.

“[It’s nice to see] all the churches in our community coming together and offering scriptures, saying a prayer, singing a song, and just praying for our community and our nation,” said Moorefield.

Each church is given around 20 minutes to give a sermon or lead a hymn before ending with their congregation taking turns offering prayers.

The theme for 2024’s National Day of Prayer is “Lift Up the Word – Light Up the World.”

Bishop Timothy Schofield said that lifting up the word is the most important thing.

“It’s necessary that we come together in prayer, because, first of all, it recognizes God and it puts us in his divine care,” said Schofield. “We seek him for all things, and the best way to bring about change is through prayer.”

The National Day of Prayer event began at 8 A.M. and lasted until 7 P.M.
