Bebe Rexha Called Out Music Industry Ageism: "I Make My Own Rules"

Bebe Rexha is "fed up with being put in a box," and she's speaking out against music executives that have continually tried to dictate her identity.

On Monday, August 12, the often outspoken pop star shared a social media post "dedicated to the music executive who said I am too old to be sexy." For the post, Bebe accompanied a mirror selfie with a note, and detailed to her followers a conversation that she reportedly had with an unnamed music industry member. The person called her brand "confusing" and didn't understand why the singer posted "sexy pics" on Instagram at the age of 29.

Bebe rightfully responded, saying, "I make my own rules. I'm tired of women getting labeled as "hags" when they get old and guys get labeled as sexy with age." She went on to point out that she's turning 30 on August 30, and just because she's celebrating another year of getting older doesn't mean she intends to change who she is. "I'm not gonna lie about my age or sing songs that I feel will sell better because they sound 'younger.' I'm gonna celebrate my age..." She closed the note by dedicating the photograph to the executive who had raised issue with her brand, writing, "Is this too sexy for you?"

Many responded on the photograph in support of Bebe, including Taylor Swift, who wrote, "DRAG THEM. 29 YEAR OLDS UNITE." Others on Instagram also shared appreciation for Bebe's words, including Rita Ora, Lauren Jauregui, and Jamie Lynn Spears. "You are beautiful, getting sexier with age and your talent SINGS for itself. Keep making those rules," Rita wrote.

The singer has continually advocated for change in the music industry, opening up about the challenges she's faced, including her continuing experiences with mental health. Back in February, she also slammed designers that had reportedly refused to dress her for the Grammys because of her size. After calling out the designers, she later found her perfect dress, and even twirled for the cameras.
