It was a warm Saturday in September when Bear Rinehart stepped on stage at Moon River Music Fest in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Just a few days before, he had no idea he was even going to play. When a spot at the festival opened up unexpectedly, Drew Holcomb, a friend of Bear's and a fellow musician, called with a request to fill the spot. All of a sudden, Bear and his band, Needtobreathe, became the headlining act of the weekend. Needless to say, they pulled it off.
The rock band has been touring for more than 10 years with eight albums under their belt. Their ninth studio album, Caves just released with a gritty folk-rock sound that somehow feels new and nostalgic at the same time. It focuses on the introspective moments in life, the lonely seasons that people often don’t want to get vulnerable enough to talk about it. But that’s why the band is so excited for it. Bear says it's one of the most ambitious and vulnerable albums they’ve put out.
“This is a very thankful record,” the musician explained. “That’s a different thing for us because I feel like we’ve always had this 'something to prove, chip on our shoulder,' kind of thing. It’s the first time I think we successfully got the ego out of the way.”
The album is complete with 11 songs that are thought provoking yet fun. Four of the songs are collaborations with country artists Old Dominion and Carly Pierce, plus the bluesy folk singer Foy Vance.
The song many people are already talking about is "Dreams," an upbeat and inspirational tune they created with their Nashville friends, Judah and The Lion. But that's not the only time you'll see the bands together.
Judah and the Lion is joining Needtobreathe on their new tour, The Caves World Tour, which kicks off this October.
When he's not on the road or in the studio, Bear is spending as much time as possible with his family. A husband and dad of three, the man stays pretty busy. When it comes to his ideal weekend, he loves quality time with the fam and getting outdoors to do anything that lets him get a little competitive, whether it be golf or football. And now that football season is here, he tries his best not to miss an Alabama football game.
