When my husband woke up recently and said, “My whole body hurts,” and I felt the same way, I knew it was time for a new mattress. Not to tell you the end of the story first, but I got a fantastic new mattress from Bear—and I also got you a limited-time discount code just for Yahoo readers: use YAHOO20 to get 20 percent off your entire purchase. Nice!

A bit of background: We spend a lot of time at my mom’s house, and often sleep in her guest room. This is not a good thing, and let me explain. My mom is a big thrift-store shopper, which means—you guessed it—she found the mattress (if you can call it that) at a tag sale. Eek.

Both my husband and I literally would wake up in pain. My hips hurt. My back hurt. My elbows hurt. My head even ached. I was sweaty in the morning—was it the mattress itself or the 40-year-old mattress cover my mom probably also got at a tag sale? Who knows?

When we decided it was time to order a new mattress for that room, I knew where to go: Bear. I had heard great things about this brand and figured that with their impressive return policy (100 days!), it was worth a shot. And if you want to return the mattress, it’s not like you have to squish it back in the box and drag it to the post office—Bear picks it up for you! That’s what sealed the deal.

I went for the Bear Pro because it’s similar to the Bear Mattress (the original) but comes with an added top-layer of copper-infused foam. That seemed interesting to me, especially when I learned that copper is a natural anti-bacterial that helps you sleep cooler. There’s also a layer of gel memory foam that further removes unwanted body heat. Perfect—I’m a hot sleeper and need all the help I can get.

Also, when you read reviews on the site—all of them are five-stars, by the way—they’re overwhelmingly encouraging. You’ll see words like “life changing,” “amazing,” and “the perfect amount of firm and comfortable.” Sold!

I have to say that from setup to sleep, the entire process was...a dream.

Setting it up

The mattress arrived in a surprisingly manageable box. I opened it up, took out the mattress, snipped the surrounding plastic and, like magic, the mattress started inflating. I was mesmerized.

I was so excited to try out the new mattress but couldn’t figure out if it was ok to sleep on it that night or not. The website said: “Your mattress will be good to sleep on as soon as it fully expands. The mattress might take 24 to 48 hours to fully decompress depending on the length of time it was in the box.” But that didn’t quite help, because I didn’t know how to tell if was fully expanded or how long it lived in the box. So I decided to wait until the next night to test it out.

Sweet dreams

It was worth the wait. I’m serious when I say that this might be the most comfortable mattress my tired mom body has ever had the privilege of snoozing on. Right when I lay down, I felt like my body was supported—and not just the heavier parts of my body like my hips or my head. I mean every.part.of.my.body. I felt cradled, in a way, and as a mom who takes care of kids all day it was nice to feel pampered!

I looked on the website to see what fantastical powers lay within. It turns out that the reason I felt so supported was because...I was being supported. The mattress is crafted of premium contouring memory foam that’s CertiPUR-US-certified, meaning it’s made without heavy metals, ozone depleters or formaldehyde.

The mattress top is hand-woven with Celliant, which is an FDA-approved infrared textile that uses minerals and fibers to harness your body’s energy. The result? Your temperature is regulated, and blood flow is increased to help with circulation and other issues. Basically, Celliant absorbs the energy our bodies give off and redirects it back into our skin to make us feel more renewed and energized in the morning. Amazing.

Got allergies?

The other fantastic thing about this mattress is that it’s great for people with allergies (namely, my husband, who sneezes and sniffs constantly—drives me nuts). Copper actually repels and inhibits the growth of bacteria, allergens and other microbes. I seriously think he’s been sniffling less (it’s been great for our marriage).

Foundation considerations

The mattress can rest directly on a platform bed or a special foundation. But don’t make the mistake I did. I used a standard boxspring—and this mattress does not work well with that. When I’d sit on the edge, I’d slide right off.

When I investigated further (a.k.a. checked the Bear website), I discovered that you’re not supposed to use a traditional coil boxspring “because it does not provide the evenly distributed surface area needed for proper support.” And that was exactly the case for me. A call to the company and a few days later I received the Bear Foundation—it’s made of solid wood and so pretty you won’t want to cover it with a bedskirt. It’s wrapped in a charcoal-colored fabric that looks clean and minimalist. So, yes, not only will your body feel great but your bed will look great, too.

Just the other day, my husband woke up and said, “It’s so nice to wake up and not have my whole body hurt.” And you know what? I agree.
