Bear Holed Up in Tree in Busy Connecticut Town Has Residents Divided

It is hibernation season, after all.

As the winter months creep in, we're all doing what we can to stay cozy and warm... including this black bear. He's made himself comfortable in the hollow of a tree, and-- as cute as he looks with his face poking out of the hole--the folks who live nearby are both fascinated and concerned. That's because the tree he chose is in the middle of a busy Connecticut neighborhood!

WKYC Channel 3 posted some fantastic footage of the animal on their YouTube channel, but it was NBC Connecticut who spoke with the bear's closest neighbors. We think it's safe to say that the bruin is causing quite a stir in West Hartford!

Okay, that bear is pretty dang cute if you ask us. Then again--we aren't living next to him! Martha Guidry is a West Hartford resident who lives near the property where the bear made his home. NBC Connecticut reports that all that separates her home from the tree is a six-foot-tall fence, but she's not concerned.

"Every once in a while, he pokes his head out and says hello," she told the news outlet. "But he hasn’t really moved, so, I think he’s down for the count." That makes sense given the time of year! Still, we understand why other residents are wary of the area.

Kimberly Plumb told NBC, “I just don’t want it to be out looking for food and you know startling a person or a kid or an animal and having a bad outcome.” To be fair, that does sound like a nightmare. We'd think that wouldn't be much of a concern over the winter, but who knows what will happen come spring?
