‘Beaches are finally open’: New Yorkers enjoy the start of beach season

THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) — The city’s public beaches opened today with lifeguards on duty.

Orchard Beach in the Bronx was packed with people taking in the sun and the water this Memorial Day long weekend.

Travelers cope with crowds and high prices on the busiest day of Memorial Day weekend

Liam Morel, 7, and his mom, Eliana, spent Saturday relaxing at Orchard Beach.

The two are from Harlem but love coming down to Orchard Beach.

“The beaches are finally open! And we couldn’t wait to get ourselves in the water and the sand,” Morel said.

“We love it. It’s close by. It’s like a 30-minute drive; there’s always a lot of kids, and it’s close by.”

Marcie Rodriguez was there with her mom, her twin sister, their mom, kids, and husband for a family day.

“It’s really nice outside. We just wanted them to enjoy the weather also the water. They love to swim their fish.” Rodriguez said.

Sonia and Joel Silver now live in Yonkers but are originally from the Bronx.

They spent some alone time at the beach Saturday before plans with family for the long weekend.

Sonia will turn 73 on Sunday.

Joel Silver said, “When you grow up here, you just love it. It’s just something about growing up in the Bronx.”

He added, “It’s beautiful, it’s calm, it’s really great: you don’t have to drive out to Jones Beach and deal with the traffic.”

During the season, city beaches are open for swimming from 10 to 6, and lifeguards are on duty.

The season will run until Sept 8th.
