Beach Bites: Magoo’s Sports and Spirits

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Magoo’s Sports and Spirits has been a Myrtle Beach neighborhood sports bar since 1995, opening their first location in downtown.

“We’re probably one of the most popular local bars in town,” owner James Mulvanerton said.

In 2008, they moved to their current location off Highway 501. Mulvanerton said after the move, he had 10 times the customers.

“During COVID, the unit next door came available and we quickly flipped it over and made it our no smoking side because we’ve always been known for smoking here,” Mulvanerton said.

Magoo’s is also known for having some of the best chicken wings in Myrtle Beach, offering 15 different flavors.

“My wife coined the phrase ‘famous for wings’ and we have been ever since,” Mulvanerton said. “We’ve won lots of contests and that put us on the map.”

One of customers’ favorites is the buffalo garlic parmesan wing. The kicking flavor with the parmesan cheese on top is both savory and delicious.

While wings may be their specialty, they also have burgers, seafood baskets, chicken bog balls and paninis.

At Magoo’s, you can come in, grab a seat and enjoy a nice, cold beverage at their large bar.

“At my old location, there was never enough seats at the bar,” Mulvanerton said. “So, now I have the biggest sitting bar in Myrtle Beach.”

Now, you may be wondering where the name “Magoo’s” came from.

“I met my wife in 1989.  After we started dating, I got the nickname Magoo. Because in her mind, I was putzing around too much and not getting things done like Magoo fumbles around blind,” Mulvanerton said. “Then when it came to coming out with a name for the bar, I didn’t do something again. She called out ‘Magoo’ and everyone in the room was like, ‘that’s the name of the bar.’”

Not only can you enjoy fantastic food and drinks — there are pool tables, corn hole and lots of dart boards.

You can find Magoo’s on Waccamaw Boulevard just off of Highway 501 in Myrtle Beach. Happy hour is everyday from 4 p.m to 7:30 p.m.
