Hollywood director and producer Baz Luhrmann, alongside costume designer Catherine Martin, his wife and frequent collaborator, are hoping the third time’s a charm for their 19th-century New York City townhouse. The couple are dropping the five-story Anglo-Italianate row house back on to the market for $15.9 million after listing it for $19.995 million in 2022, and then again for $17.99 million in September of last year.

Following their 2017 purchase of the six-bedroom property for $13.5 million, the couple did an extensive renovation on the space but were never able to move in; they chose to ride out the pandemic in their native Australia, according to the Wall Street Journal. By the time the pandemic lockdowns had abated, the Elvis producers had become empty nesters and simply had no need for all the space.

“We just thought, ‘This is ridiculous,’” Martin told the outlet in 2022. “The house has been empty for nearly three years. And somebody should be enjoying it. But it’s breaking our hearts.”

The 8,500-square-foot abode sits on a northern end of the Stuyvesant Square Historic District, an area in the Gramercy neighborhood filled with charming 19th-century buildings. Typically, town houses in New York City run between 18 and 20 feet, so the 28-foot-wide home is an especially spacious gem.

The 1850s-build sits directly across from the park. A balcony runs along the width of the second floor. High-ceilinged rooms receive ample natural light from large windows, and arched doorways can be found throughout. An elevator and whimsically winding staircase connect the floors. Original moldings, along with five fireplaces, are featured throughout the home.

The primary suite is located to the rear of the parlor level and comes with an ensuite bathroom, a walk-in closet, and a private terrace. Prior to Luhrmann and Martin’s ownership, Clifford Jordan, a renowned jazz tenor saxophonist, lived on the fourth floor for decades. That area is still a standalone suite set up with a living room, bar, gym, bedroom, and bathroom.

The kitchen reflects a bit of the glamorously dramatic movie sets the couple is known for, with white subway tiles and a marble island that complements dark wooden cabinetry. The kitchen leads directly to a backyard with ivy-clad brick walls.

The Great Gatsby and Moulin Rouge producers may be back in Australia for the foreseeable future. Speaking to The Daily Mail in September, the couple said, “We shot Elvis entirely on the Gold Coast in Queensland and will continue to develop shows to be shot there.”
