Bayern Munich owns the first major sports title in the post-coronavirus world.

Bayern secured its eighth straight German Bundesliga championship on Tuesday with a 1-0 win away to relegation-threatened Werder Bremen. The Bavarian titans got the only goal they would need from star striker Robert Lewandowski — who else? — just before halftime, and they kept a desperate Bremen side off the scoreboard the rest of the way, despite having to play the final 11 minutes of the match with 10 men after Canadian left back Alphonso Davies received his second yellow card of the contest.

Lewandowski’s strike was his Bundesliga-leading 31st this season and 45th across all competitions:

Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer preserved the shutout and the three points with a spectacular late save on Werder’s Yuya Osako.

U.S. men’s national team striker Josh Sargent played the final 28 minutes for the hosts, who failed to leapfrog Fortuna Dusseldorf and remain 17th in the 18-team Bundesliga, with two matches — against beatable Mainz and Cologne — still to play.

Davies will be suspended for Bayern’s game versus Freiburg on Saturday. Borussia Dortmund was the last club other than Bayern to win the Bundesliga, claiming back-to-back crowns in 2011 and 2012 under then-manager Jurgen Klopp.

Bayern travels to Wolfsburg on the final day of the Bundesliga season. The club also remains in contention for the German Cup and UEFA Champions League, which is expected to conclude in August.
