Baton Rouge advocate creates safe space for conversations at mental health event

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — May is recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month and one local advocate is celebrating her birthday differently by organizing a mental health event after overcoming her own struggles.

Ashley Rankins, the organizer of Mental Wealth: Curating a Safe Space, hopes the event will push people to have uncomfortable conversations in a safe space with professionals on hand to walk attendees through the discussions.

“This event is going to be a curated safe space and a lot of times we prioritize our financials and our physical health, but sometimes our mental health is lacking, so I wanted to pool those resources in one room for the people that needed them,” said Rankins.

Rankins discussed how important talking to someone can be and the difference it can make.

“It makes all the difference,” said Rankins. “It’s probably the difference between you being admitted into a hospital and you just going out with your friends for a spa day.”

The free event will be from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Sky Lounge in Baton Rouge on Sunday, May 26.

The panel will include specialists such as Lloyd Benson, Jemiela Castleberry, Leah Cullins, State Rep. Larry Selders (D-La.), Brittany Jorden and Luke St. John.

Though it is a free event, registration is required and can be found on Eventbrite.
