Basque Festival has showcased traditional dances, handball competition for 50 years

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A gathering full of food and music is set to take place at the Basque Club on Memorial Day weekend.

On May 25, the Basque Festival will take place at the Kern County Basque Club, at 2301 S. Union Ave. The popular event invites guests for an entire weekend full of lamb lunches, handball and a Mus tournament.

California Living Museum to celebrate 41st birthday

Organizers say California State University Bakersfield will be at the picnic to award the winners of the Bizi Emankorra Award. The Basque Club will be packed throughout the weekend, with people celebrating and making their way to the Basque breakfast Woolgrowers, on Memorial Day.

FRIDAY, MAY 24

  • 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. – NABO Convention Meeting @ Wool Growers Restaurant

  • 5:30 p.m.- 2024 NABO Bizi Emankorra award presentations & concert with Esti Markez Taldea @ California State University Bakersfield Institute for Basque Studies in the Doré Theater

SATURDAY, MAY 25

  • 8:00 a.m. – Mus Tournament – $40 per player (Lunch included)1st Place Team – $500
    2nd Place Team – $250

  • 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. – NABO Pilota Finals

  • 12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m- Lunch: Barbeque Chicken Lunch – Adults: $25     Children: $20

  • 3:00 p.m. – NABO Txerriki Contest: Tripota/Lukainka/Chorizo

  • 4:00 p.m. – Pelotaris from Euskadi

  • 5:00 p.m. – Esti Markez Taldea

  • 6:30 p.m. – Tri-Tip Dinner – Adults: $35 or $30 Pre-Sale         Children 12 & under: $20

  • 7:30 p.m. – Dance Performances by visiting dance groups and KCBC Adult Dancers

  • 11:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Gateau Basque Contest: drop off next to the outside ticket booth.

  • 2:00 p.m. –Performances by KCBC Dance Groups and Klika

  • 5:00 p.m. – Lukainka/Ham & Cheese Sandwiches – $14

  • 5:00 p.m. – Pelota/Handball game – Pelotaris from Euskadi
