'Based on a True Story' Could Easily Do a Season 2. But Will It?

Based on a True Story isn't actually based on a true story, but the Peacock original comedy is as satisfying as your favorite true crime podcast IRL. Without giving too much away ( because I wouldn't want to spoil your true crime-inspired television binge), Based on a True Story has somewhat of a cliff-hanger ending. I won't say what happens to who and how many questions you'll want answered ASAP, but there needs to be another season!
Who could have guessed that blackmailing a serial killer into starting a podcast with you would backfire? Probably everybody, but Ava (Kaley Cuoco) and Nathan (Chris Messina) do it anyway. What I don't think anyone could have guessed is that the serial killer in question, played by Tom Bateman, would have used their arrangement as a way to turn killing into content. It's deliciously evil, macabre, and hilarious.
Has Based on a True Story been renewed for season 2?
As of season 1's release, the show has neither been canceled nor renewed. We'll have to wait on a few things—like season 1 ratings and the (hopefully favorable) resolution of the WGA strike—to find out one way or another.
It's hard to make an educated guess on how this will shape up. Personally, I think the show seems like a natural fit for a renewal. It's funny, probably somewhat inexpensive to make, and doesn't require a ton of episodes per season. But even though they're part of NBC, Peacock is a relatively new at the original series game. There aren't any long-running shows just yet. And while recent comedies like Poker Face, Killing It, and Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin were renewed for second seasons, popular shows like Rutherford Falls, Girls5Eva, and the Saved By The Bell reboot were canceled after season 2. So right now, it's anyone's guess whether or not Based on a True Story gets more than one go.
Who would be in Based on a True Story season 2?
Hey, this is a show with murder in it! Telling you who survives season 1 would be a major spoiler. Let's just say that I would expect some of, if not all, the main characters to return.
When would Based on a True Story be released?
We probably wouldn't see a season 2 until 2024 given... everything. I doubt we'll even see a trailer for Based on a True Story season 2 by this time next year, even if it does get the green-light. My best guess is that it would be late summer or fall at the earliest, since the WGA strike is ongoing and both Kaley and Chris are busy people. They have projects to promote! Kaley has a thriller coming out called Role Play and a new season of the animated Harley Quinn series. Chris also has a thriller, set in space, called ISS. So that might make scheduling tricky. But at least you know where to catch them while we wait for news about Based on a True Story season 2.
