Barilla has reformulated its Protein+ line of pasta so it's a suitable option for vegans. With the new ingredients, Barilla is made with lentils, chickpeas, and peas, and it uses no animal products whatsoever.

The Protein+ line was initially made using egg whites and offered 10 grams of protein per serving. In order to keep up with industry trends, Barilla removed egg whites from the ingredient list which makes this line totally vegan-friendly. Protein+ pasta comes in spaghetti, angel hair, thin spaghetti, farfalle, penne, elbows, and rotini.

According to the press release, the Protein+ pastas are not only a good source of protein, but they also offer iron, thiamin, folic acid, riboflavin, and niacin, which help with energy and metabolism. These pastas are also non-GMO and kosher as well.

President of Barilla Americas Jean-Pierre Comte said the change in the formula for Protein+ came about to fulfill a consumer need.

"We are always monitoring trends and looking to offer products that fit our consumers' needs, and in this case, we focused on those that lead a completely plant-based lifestyle, but want more protein," he said in the press release.

Barilla Protein+ pastas can be found in most supermarkets and are also available for purchase on Amazon. Prices vary by location and depending on the pasta. Whether you're a devout vegan or want to give that plant-based life a try, this pasta is sure to make that way easier. Now you'll just need to decide on the sauce!
