BareMinerals' New Anti-Aging Collection Is Perfect for Dry Winter Skin

You've definitely heard of retinol before, the dermatologist-approved answer to pretty much any skin issue. You also may have heard of bakuchoil, the trending, hard to pronounce plant-based alternative to vitamin A that doesn't cause the same side effects of traditional retinol (which makes it a great alternative for those with sensitive skin).

But an ingredient you might not be familiar with is the Picão Preto plant, the star of bareMinerals new Ageless Phyto-Retinol collection. The line includes four staple skincare products: face cream, serum, neck cream, and eye cream.

"When looking to source a new and effective ingredient for the bareMinerals brand we work through our technical team," says Gail Boye, the brand's senior vice president of product development. "This is a group of scientists and specialists who are continually researching and investigating new technologies and ingredients.”

Like backuchoil, the plant isn't a vitamin A derivative, but it offers similar benefits including improving the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin texture without the irritation and dryness commonly associated with using retinol and retinoids.

"The phyto-retinol is a plant-based retinol alternative, so its really for those consumers who want a more natural approach that offers similar benefits of retinol, but without any potential irritation such as redness, dryness, scaling, or sensitivity," says Dr. Joyce Park, board-certified dermatologist and bareMinerals global dermatology ambassador. "People with sensitive skin or those who have a hard time tolerating retinol or other retinoids would really benefit from using this collection."

Unlike traditional retinol or retinoid products, the phyto-retinol is gentle enough to use every night, without the need to build up a tolerance to prevent the retinoid uglies, a nickname for the redness and flaking people may experience when starting on a new vitamin A product. That being said, Dr. Park recommends doing a patch test before slathering any of the products on your face, for extra insurance.

The phyto-retinol also stands out because it plays nice with other skincare ingredients, so you don't need to alternate what nights you use it if you also include actives like AHA acids in your routine, for example.

"A lot of the ingredients we say retinol and retinoids don’t play well with are because there’s the potential for extra irritation and sensitivity," Dr. Park explains. "Because this phyto-retinol doesn’t cause any of those potential irritations to the skin, it plays really well with other ingredients. So, I don’t see any issue with using it with other products in your routine."

Speaking of your nighttime skincare routine, unlike traditional retinol or retinoid products, the phyto-retinol is gentle enough to use every night, without the need to build up a tolerance to prevent the retinoid uglies, a nickname for the redness and flaking many people experience when starting on a new vitamin A product. That being said, Dr. Park recommends doing a patch test before slathering any of the products on your face, for extra insurance.

In addition to the phyto-retinol, the collection is also formulated with tried-and-true ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and protein peptides to boost hydration and support your natural collagen and elastin production, which will help maintain firmness. The brand's clinical trials saw some visible results in one week of use, but Dr. Park says generally it takes about six to eight weeks to see sustained, long-term improvements in fine lines, skin tone, and texture.

Whether or not your skin is prone to irritation from retinol and retinoid products, Dr. Park says opting for a gentler vitamin A alternative like bareMinerals' Ageless Phyto-Retinol products is a great option during the winter, when skin tends to be more dry from the cold weather and indoor heating.
