Barbie Teams Up With National Geographic for a New Line of Travel-Themed Dolls

After 60 years of Dream Campers, Dream Houses, and Dream Convertibles, Barbie is partnering with National Geographic on a travel-themed line of dolls, accessories and media that will focus not only on exploring the world, but also on science, conservation and research.

The new line will feature career dolls and playsets that highlight occupations that are typically underrepresented by women, according to National Geographic. By giving Barbie these new jobs, children who are interested in science and conservation can find a new role model.

“Barbie allows girls to try on new roles through storytelling by showing them they can be anything,” said Lisa McKnight, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Barbie, in a statement. “Through our partnership with National Geographic, girls can now imagine themselves as an Astrophysicist, Polar Marine Biologist and more.”

Barbie’s new careers include Polar Marine Biologist, Photojournalist, Astrophysicist, Wildlife Conservationist, and Entomologist (also known as the Butterfly Scientist).

The companies hope the new line will encourage learning: “Through our partnership with Barbie, we are excited to reach kids in a new way, using the power of play to inspire our next generation of explorers, scientists and photographers,” said Susan Goldberg, editor in chief of National Geographic magazine and editorial director of National Geographic Partners.

In addition to her new jobs, Barbie will also travel in style with a new Dream Plane and Helicopter. The products will have special promotions online and at select retailers and will officially be available nationwide in the Fall 2019.

The dolls and career playsets are priced between $14.99 to $29.99 USD. Until you can pick up a new Barbie, you can also follow her adventures on Instagram. In addition, related programming and content will roll out throughout the year on the Barbie YouTube channel, according to Mattel.
