Barbie Is Being Given the Board of Directors’ Tribute at the CFDA Awards

From rockstar to sneaker designer, Barbie has done just about everything. After conquering the world of toys and inspiring Kacey Musgraves's choice of Met Gala attire, the doll is now earning a major award, and will be recognized at this year's CFDA Fashion Awards.

During the upcoming CFDA Fashion Awards ceremony on June 3, Barbie will be given the Board of Directors’ Tribute, Vogue reports. The doll is the first nonliving attendee to ever receive the award, and as Steven Kolb, president and CEO of the CFDA, explained in a statement, the doll's history has made quite the mark in fashion. “Barbie has had such a wide influence on American fashion and culture," he said. "Her story personally resonated with so many CFDA members that the Board of Directors decided to honor her with the special tribute.”

This award is definitely one that Barbie will want to tell Ken about, too. According to Vogue, Michelle Obama, Janelle Monáe, Cecile Richards, and Gloria Steinem have also received the honor.

In a statement, Richard Dickson, president and chief operation officer of Mattel called it a "tremendous honor," saying, "For the past six decades, Barbie has inspired and been inspired by fashion and creative communities. Barbie has had the great privilege of collaborating with some of the greatest designers of our time and this award is a moment to celebrate her lasting influence."

In recent years, Barbie has branched out beyond her humble beginnings, offering updated versions including a doll with wheelchair and a prosthetic leg. In 2017, Mattel also released the first Barbie to ever wear a hijab, modeled after Ibtihaj Muhammad, who was the first American to compete and medal in the Olympics while wearing a hijab.

This all followed a 2016 rollout in which Barbie received a complete makeover, including a wider variety of skin tones and body types. While the effort helped the company shed many some of the unrealistic body expectations displayed by previous dolls, some people on Twitter expressed mixed reactions in response to the announcement of Barbie's CFDA Fashion Award.

Journalist Christina Binkley and Washington Post fashion critic Robin Givhan pointed out the illustrious nature of past recipients, while Matthew Schneier, styles reporter for The New York Times, tweeted, "Seems like a very, very weird time in human history to decide that Barbie needs a @CFDA Award."
