Barbie Beats Harry Potter to Become Warner Bros Highest Grossing Film of All Time

For the last 12 years, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 held the title of Warner Bro's highest-grossing film of all time. Raking in $1.34 billion during its original release, the studio's final instalment in the beloved children's franchise also held the coveted spot of the 17th highest-grossing movie of all time from any studio until Barbie came along and kicked it aside.

Greta Gerwig's Barbie has broken all kinds of records since its release, including becoming the first film solely directed by a woman to make a billion dollars.

Are there any records left for Barbie to beat? It is chasing down The Super Mario Bros. Movie for highest grossing film of the year. With the famous plumber brothers making $1.35 billion, it's expected that Barbie will cross that in the coming days, with it already comfortably over $1.34 billion.

The film will also receive an IMAX release from September 22 due to its overwhelming success. Director, Greta Gerwig, told Deadline, "The worldwide enthusiasm for Barbie has been overwhelming, humbling and deeply moving ... So many Barbie fans went on this journey with us, and we can't thank them enough for supporting the film and sharing their Barbie experience in theaters, across social media and out in the world. We made Barbie for the big screen, so it's a thrill to be able to bring it to IMAX, the biggest screen of all. And as a special thanks to Barbie fans, we're excited to share a little bit more of our cast and crew's incredible work by adding special new footage we hope audiences will enjoy."

Despite all its success, Warner Bros announced Barbie will hit VOD on September 5, which may stick a spanner in the box office numbers. With the option to watch at home from next week, we'll likely see the pace of Barbie's box office domination slow down, but what a run it's been on since its release last month.
