Former President George W. Bush may have been a staunchly pro-life politician, but today his daughter, Barbara Pierce Bush, gave the keynote address at a Planned Parenthood luncheon at the Omni Hotel in downtown Fort Worth, Texas.

"I am very proud to stand with Planned Parenthood," Bush told the crowd of about 1,000, according to local newspaper the Star-Telegram. "I am proud to stand with Planned Parenthood not only because women, regardless of where they are from, deserve to live dignified health lives, [but also] ... because it's a really good investment."

She continued, "We know that when women are healthy, their families and their children are healthier too."

Bush, who serves as the CEO of Global Health Corps, reportedly also shared her frustration that "we are still making the case of why women's health matters in 2017."

The former first daughter was a noted Hillary supporter during the 2016 election, and revealed in her speech that Trump's election was a surprise.

"I was under the assumption things would go differently," she said. "I thought the cards were going to fall in a different way."

"And I could not be more happy that I said yes [to speaking at the Fort Worth luncheon] now."

Her appearance at the event was not without criticism. More than a dozen pro-life protestors gathered outside the luncheon.

"We don't want to leave Planned Parenthood unchallenged, especially with George W. Bush having left such a pro-life legacy," one told the Star-Telegram. "We don't understand why Barbara Bush would go against that legacy."

But the organizers outside did not seem to detract from the event; the local chapter of Planned Parenthood raised more than $400,000.

"It is so exciting to know we have the tools to solve so many problems," Bush said. "We know this is just the beginning."
