Barbara Bui RTW Spring 2017

There were some wide-ranging themes at play at Barbara Bui‘s spring collection, from the prerequisite ath-leisure trend — with fluffy marabou baseball jackets, sexy striped bandage tops and minis and oversized track pants — to an arty storyline hooked on graphic mixed-media minis in color-blocked patent leather and silk panels in quirky color mixes like bubble gum pink, red and mustard.

The designer has even updated her signature slim suits, with high-gloss treatments that looked plastic, yet were super soft to the touch and that connected the collection’s contrasts — between texture and shine, tradition and high-tech.

The concept worked best on the travel-scented pieces, notably on a one-shoulder mini embroidered with a mosaic of colored patent leather patches arranged to evoke Moroccan tiles, and on the hood of a white translucent parka.

But there was something for everyone here, with Sarah Ellen, the Antipodean teenage social-media star with a million-odd followers, eyeing up the run of silk windbreaker silhouettes in eye-popping Nineties-raver neons.
