The fall television lineup is here, and season two of Baptiste is one of three series premiering as part of Masterpiece PBS’s 50thanniversary celebration. The first season of Baptiste, which premiered in the U.S. in April 2020, followed the retired detective as a missing person case lead him to a potential human trafficking ring. The season ended with not one but several bombshells. Now, the wait for season two is finally over, and with a newly released trailer, viewers can get a first look at what's in store.

U.K. viewers, for whom the season has already aired, were reportedly captivated from the very start of season two. The first episode was described as “emotional” by Radio Times, which also stated that it begins with Baptiste reeling from a personal tragedy. In case you haven’t watched the first season yet, you won’t find any spoilers here. But could this “family tragedy” be related to the shocking end of the first season?

Here’s everything we know so far about Baptiste Season 2:

Fiona Shaw is a major (new) player.

Of course, Tchéky Karyo will be back as the titular retired detective Julien Baptiste. According to Masterpiece’s description, the new season will be cover his “most complex case to date.”

Joining the cast is Fiona Shaw, who viewers might recognize as Petunia Dursley from the Harry Potter films, or from her roles in Fleabag, Killing Eve, or Enola Holmes. Shaw will make her series debut as Emma Chambers, a British ambassador whose life gets turned upside down when her husband and two sons disappear during a skiing trip in the mountains of Hungary.

Other series newcomers include Ace Bhatti (Bohemian Rhapsody, EastEnders, Bend It Like Beckham), who will play “Nadeem.” American audiences will also be introduced to Hungarian actress Dorka Gryllus, who will play “Zsofia Arslan.” So far, no further information about their characters has been shared.

Anastasia Hille will return as Celia Baptiste in several episodes, while Barbara Sarafian reappear as Martha Horchner in only one episode.

This season’s drama unfolds in Budapest.

While viewers of the first season saw Baptiste solving crime in the heart of Amsterdam, the detective finds himself in Budapest for season 2. According to Masterpiece’s description, Baptiste will navigate the seedy underbelly of Budapest in an effort to find Chambers’ family. Complicating the case are a corrupt police force and an international media circus.

Season 2 premieres in October.

The second season premieres on Masterpiece PBS on October 17 at 10 p.m. ET. The sixth and final episode will air on November 21.

There probably won’t be a third season.

U.K. outlet Radio Times reported that Jack Williams, co-creator of the series, said there will not be a third season. “I think we began to worry – does it become a formula? Do we suddenly make him just another cop?,” Williams said. “And we thought, well that aside, let’s just tell a great story for him and a great story for an actress that we’ve wanted to work with forever [Fiona Shaw] and the thing came together and as we wrote it, we started to realise that if we did this, we wouldn’t get to do another one.”

Williams continued, “We love this show, we love Tchéky, we’ve been working together a long time but it’s about doing the right thing for the show and the character, and not going, ‘Hey, we’ll be back next year with more crazy adventures – keep watching until you don’t!’ It’s something great that we all love, that we’re proud of.”

So, it looks like this will be the end of the road for Baptiste the series. But as for Baptiste the detective? Tchéky Karyo told Radio Times that he’d be up for playing the role again, so we’re not ruling anything out.
