The Federal Reserve, which regulates the nation’s banking system, observes eleven federal holidays each year—and no, Good Friday is not one of them. Here are the holidays recognized by the Federal Reserve:

  • New Year's Day

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day

  • Presidents Day

  • Juneteenth

  • Independence Day

  • Labor Day

  • Columbus Day

  • Veterans Day

  • Thanksgiving

  • Christmas Day

Since Good Friday is not a federal holiday, public school students will have classes to attend and homework assignments to turn in that day if they're not on spring break already. Government employees will go to work. Court will be in session. Mail will run. Banks will largely be open.

Which States Recognize Good Friday?

Notice, we said that banks will largely be open. There are always exceptions to the rules! Yes, the federal government of the United States recognizes certain holidays. However, each state has the ability to recognize additional holidays. As the Federal Times reported, there are twelve states that currently recognize Good Friday as a state holiday:

  • Connecticut

  • Delaware

  • Florida

  • Hawaii

  • Indiana

  • Kentucky

  • Louisiana

  • New Jersey

  • North Carolina

  • North Dakota

  • Texas

  • Tennessee

In the above states where Good Friday is observed as a holiday, state offices and courts are closed, and other businesses may close as well. We encourage anyone that belongs to credit unions or smaller, community banks to contact their branches to confirm if they are open.

Are Banks Open on Good Friday?

The stock market will be closed, but for the most part, banks will be open on Good Friday. If you live in a state that recognizes Good Friday as a holiday or belong to a smaller bank, make sure to double-check their business hours or give them a call.
