Keratosis pilaris, often referred to as KP by beauty aficionados and derms, is a common skin concern that appears as a bumpy "chicken skin" texture on upper arms, legs, and even faces, caused by excess keratin plugging hair follicles. The condition, Dr. Corey L. Hartman of Skin Wellness Dermatology in Birmingham, Alabama, explains, is a "dry skin marker that is typically associated with eczema and atopic dermatitis." As such, Dr. Hartman says that though KP is typical on dry skin that produces little oil, it's also common in children. The condition, however, improves with the onset of puberty, which triggers an increase in oil production.
Some calling cards of KP? According to Dr. Hartman, KP is characterized by fine, red bumps and dry patches—it has to do with the lack of moisturization— as well as decreased exfoliation and buildup of dead skin in pores. Another key pointer: "Dry environmental conditions can cause exacerbations of KP, as well as using harsh soaps, detergents, and fabric softeners."
While no real cure for the condition exists, there are plenty of ways to treat and manage the texture that those who have KP experience, from toners and body washes to scrubs, and of course, moisturizers. Here, a selection of the very best keratosis pilaris treatment products around to add to your body care routine.
