Band-Aid is creating adhesive bandages that match more skin colors. Currently, most of the options are geared towards white people and those with lighter skin tones. People have been petitioning for the brand to produce more inclusive hues, and now it’s actually happening.

Band-Aid made the announcement on Instagram on June 11 with a picture of five bandages in a range of light to dark colors. In the caption, they acknowledged that they “must” and that they “will” do better. Although they didn’t specify when the new line would be coming, it appears to be in the works.

“We hear you. We see you. We’re listening to you,” the caption reads. “We are committed to launching a range of bandages in light, medium and deep shades of Brown and Black skin tones that embrace the beauty of diverse skin. We are dedicated to inclusivity and providing the best healing solutions, better representing you.”

In addition the line, Band-Aid will be making a donation to Black Lives Matter. They say “that this is just the first among many steps together in the fight against systemic racism.”

The news is causing a mix of reactions in the comment section. While most are applauding the action, many are pointing out that a brand that started in 1920 should have taken this initiative long ago.

“It was ‘about time’ like 50 years ago… oh well, glad it’s finally happening. It’s a shame that it took a revolution for you all to open your eyes,” one person wrote. “We’ve been bruised for years and ya’ll just now figuring this out – Keep ‘em!” wrote another.

Band-Aid will be joining other companies that have already filled the need for darker adhesive bandages. Tru-Colour Bandages and Browndages launched back in 2014 and 2018, respectively, for this very reason.
