In June 2020, Johnson & Johnson’s Band-Aid brand announced that it would be creating adhesive bandages to match more skin tones. Most of the current options are for those with lighter skin tones and people have petitioned for more options. The time has come and Band-Aid has unveiled the Ourtone adhesive bandages line in shades of brown.

The bandages come in three shades, ranging from lighter brown to dark brown: BR45, BR55, and BR65. Each of the adhesive bandages come in 30-count boxes with assorted sizes and are made with flexible fabric, yet they stay on for up to 24 hours, according to Band-Aid. The Ourtone line is available on Amazon (three boxes for $8.91) and a range of retailers.

“OURTONE embraces the beauty of brown skin, with bandages designed to better blend with a range of skin tones. Made with our most comfortable fabric, OURTONE provides protection that stretches and flexes as you move,” Band-Aid wrote on Instagram.

“When we first talked about it nine months ago, it was in response to [the fact] that we didn’t feel we were moving enough,” Dawn Hampton, vice president of marketing, Consumer Experience Organization, told Essence. “This collection at its core is so important to us because we really always have been anchored in care and we strive to be inclusive.”

In addition to Ourtone, Band-Aid is striving for the brand to be more inclusive through several initiatives, including partnering with HERO COLLECTIVE, a Black-owned digital agency to help support this launch and establishing a multiyear commitment with the National Black Nurses Association to provide scholarships and membership support.

Band-Aid released bandages in a variety of skin tones in 2005, but discontinued it due to lack of interest. Something tells us that won’t be the case this time around.
