Banana Boat Voluntarily Recalls Sunscreen Due to Harmful Chemical

Stop lathering yourself with these products immediately!

If you have any fun summer outings coming up, you may want to check your products before lathering yourself with sunscreen.

While sunscreen is an important part of keeping yourself safe during the summer months, Edgewell Personal Care Company has announced a voluntary recall of several of its popular products.

"We know that you love our products, and we are conducting this recall out of an abundance of caution," read a statement on the company's website.

The nationwide recall was issued after unexpected trace levels of benzene were found during an internal review. The CDC notes that long-term exposure to benzene, a human carcinogen, can cause harmful effects on bone marrow and decrease red blood cells, which can lead to anemia.

The press release assures that benzene is not an ingredient in the products but was found in some samples due to the propellant that sprays the sunscreen out of its can.

What Items Were Recalled?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a recall on three batches of Banana Boat Hair and Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 aerosol cans. The recall does not include lotions.

The following lot codes are affected: 20016AF, 20084BF, and 21139AF.

If you have any Banana Boat products at home, check the bottom of the can for the lot codes. The expiration dates included in the recall fall between December 2022 and April 2024.

"Importantly, no other batches of Hair & Scalp (either before or after these batch codes) and no other Banana Boat products are in the scope of this recall and may continue to be used by consumers safely and as intended," the release added.

What Should You Do If You Have a Recalled Product?

Retailers have been notified to remove recalled products from shelves, per the release.

The company also wants anyone with the recalled products to immediately stop using them. The release also encourages customers to discard the product.

Banana Boat will offer a reimbursement to consumers who purchased a product with the recalled lot number. The company notes that it could take up to six to eight weeks for a reimbursement to arrive once it has been submitted. Get more information about how to proceed right here.

If you have any questions or concerns after using the recalled products, contact your healthcare provider.

Adverse reactions or "quality problems experienced with the use of this product" may be reported to FDA'sDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program either online, by regular mail, or by fax.

Currently, the FDA and Edgewell have not received any reports of consumers who have experienced adverse reactions to the product. "Daily exposure to benzene in the recalled products would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences according to an independent health assessment using established exposure modeling guidelines," the recall noted.
