Kanye West’s ripped jeans at the Met Gala on Monday were a bit underwhelming. The event, fashion’s Oscars, is the perfect place to take styles risks — just look at Will.i.am’s robot outfit and Zayn’s Terminator arms. But the rapper decided casual pants, a fancy jean jacket, and bizarre blue contact lenses were “Tech White Tie” appropriate.

Now the man behind the outfit, Balmain designer Olivier Rousteing, who also dressed Kim Kardashian West, Cindy Crawford, Alessandra Ambrosio, and six other famous names, has spoken out about Kanye’s casual ensemble, claiming the rapper insisted on wearing the double-denim outfit.

“Kanye decided to put Kanye in denim,” Rousteing told Vanity Fair. “That’s what I love about Kanye: When he knows and he wants something, I love that he believes in it.”

However, while Rousteing let Kanye’s creativity spill into the ensemble, he recalls insisting that the Famous rapper’s outfit be made more couture. “I think it’s great, and I want to go really all the way — we need to make this denim look couture,” he told West. He also claimed that West’s denim idea was pure “genius” and understands why he and Kim were named best-dressed couple of the night.

“When you bring Kanye on the red carpet, wearing denim, and you still bring couture to the next level — I mean, it makes the Met way younger, and I love that,” he said.
