The new blockbuster prequel The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes takes fans back to the dystopian dictatorship of Panem, this time 64 years before Katniss Everdeen volunteered as Tribute. The 10th annual Hunger Games are about to begin, and Coriolanus Snow is still a young man with plans to advance his family's position in the viper's nest of the Capitol.

As with any prequel, the viewer goes in knowing a lot more than the characters, and part of the movie's appeal is in seeing the choices Corio makes that will lead him to become the evil President Snow from the original Hunger Games trilogy. The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes also makes a successful case for the continued relevance of the franchise, mining great action and drama from a familiar premise—these aren't our first Games, after all—while telling the story from a different perspective.

And now that we have our first new Hunger Games movie in eight years, it's not unreasonable to wonder if there are plans afoot at Lionsgate to make more.

Will there be a sequel to The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes?

As of right now, there is no official word on whether more movies in the Hunger Games universe are being considered. But if you walked out of The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes thinking that you'd watch more movies exploring the backstory of various characters, you're not the only one. The film's director, Francis Lawrence, has said that he would love to return to Panem and potentially dig into the history of fan-favorite characters like Finnick and Haymitch from the original movies—but only with the creative input of author Suzanne Collins.

"If Suzanne has another thematic idea that she feels fits into the world of Panem — whether that's with new people [or] familiar characters [like] Finnick, Haymitch, whoever — I'd be really interested in looking at it and being a part of it," he said. "But I don't have any pull of just going, 'I would love to do Finnick's games.' He's a great character, but what's the thematic underpinnings that make it worth telling and relevant?"

Another interesting character whose limited screentime in The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes could be expanded on in a sequel is Tigris, played by Euphoria star Hunter Schafer. Introduced in this movie as Snow's cousin and confidante, she becomes disillusioned by his actions throughout the movie, and they cease to be as close. We know that Tigris will eventually break ties with Snow altogether and aid Katniss and the rebels in the future; an older version of the character appeared in Mockingjay - Part 2 played by Eugenie Bondurant.

A film charting Tigris' evolution from socialite to collaborator would certainly make for an interesting companion piece to Songbirds & Snakes—and producer Nina Jacobson agrees.

"I would love to see Snow's rise to power because he's just a great character — but Tigris, and understanding how this girl who loves him so and cares for him and becomes the woman that we saw in Mockingjay, that I'm really fascinated by," she said in an interview with People.

Schafer herself is also down for a Tigris prequel, as a fan of the movies as much as an actor. "I want to know what happens, even if I wasn’t playing her," she told Entertainment Weekly. "I want to know how we get there."
