Balenciaga Winter 2024 Takes the Idea of 'Throwing Something On' Quite Literally

If there's any one thing to give credit Demna for, it's that he's not afraid to push the creative boundaries of what can be considered luxury fashion, especially at Balenciaga. The designer followed up an athleisure-filled Fall 2024 collection with a Winter 2024 offering that brings to life (and to an extreme) the idea of just "throwing something on".

The show opened with more toned-down silhouettes, such as Cristóbal Balenciaga-inspired strapless maxis with "hip-aulettes" (as in epaulettes sewn onto the hip, to create shape like a pannier would) and ankle-grazing, hooded, faux-fur coats. But as it continued, the lineup progressed into more experimental territory: repurposing pants into wide-shouldered tops, deconstructing backpacks and reconfiguring them as mini dresses.

"As you know, I like to question things that matter to me through my work, and some of the questions I have been thinking about recently are: What is luxury?" Demna said in a voice recording accompanying the show notes. "What is fashion and why does it even matter? Who do I do what I do for?...Luxury is, by definition, a sort of scarcity, something that is not infinitely available. What seems to be truly rare and finite right now is, actually creativity itself. I believe that creativity has secretly become a new form of luxury."
