Balenciaga Turned Lightning Cables, AirPods, and More Into Accessories at Paris Fashion Week

This season, fashion is all about accessorizing with more than just bags and jewelry — and models for Balenciaga’s Paris Fashion Week FW20 proved just so.

On March 1, AirPods, the wireless headphone and statement piece for everyone from fashionistas to tech bros, officially hit the PFW runways. At Balenciaga, several models took to the catwalk wearing Apple’s new AirPod Pros, strutting their stuff with the bright white headphones on clear display in their ears.

But that’s not all there is to say about Balenciaga’s Apple love. You know your phone charger? Well, it turns out it’s the latest gotta-have fashion item. A few models used Apple’s Lightning cables as a makeshift hair tie, looping and knotting the cable to support their long hair. Some models also walked the runway with trusty iPhones in hand.

Models showcased these iStyles on a flooded runway, which creative director Demna Gvasalia claims was an emotionally-driven move. “I just wanted something quite emotionally triggering and quite sad, and I thought about flood,” explained Demna following the show. “In general, the consequences of our lifestyle — flood is kind of a metaphoric thing.”

Allegedly, the original intent of the show was that the flood was not supposed to be water but kerosene, a move Demna intended to accomplish using artificially supplied smells. While this may not have panned out, the flooded runway still provided a significant emotional impact, with water taking over several rows of seating to accomplish a “natural disaster” look.

Flooding and Apple products aside, the Balenciaga show gave viewers plenty to talk about. The majority of the collection was monochromatic black, a continuation of the dark vibe intonated by the flooded runway. Naturally, there were plenty of Demna hallmarks: sharp-shouldered tailoring, the clear influence of athleticwear, and occasional standout coloring had the creative director’s fingerprints all over them.

While the collection was considerably darker than previous offerings from the label under his tenure, there’s no doubt that it came from the mind of the Georgian designer. Now, excuse us while we try to find a fashion use for our MacBook chargers.
