Balenciaga Pays Tribute to Bernie Sanders Again at Paris Fashion Week
In January, Balenciaga turned heads when it debuted a normcore-chic men's collection inspired by Bernie Sanders. Pieces like windbreakers, puffer blankets, hoodies and polos were emblazoned with the Vermont senator's presidential campaign logo, but embroidered with the brand's name instead.
After seeing footage of the designs, Sanders responded with a laugh and insisted he's not a "great dresser or fashion maven." (A fitting answer from a modest politician who's against big money and wears a $12 haircut.)
However, creative director Demna Gvasalia apparently disagrees. He reprised the homage to the senator in his Fall 2017 Women's Ready-to-Wear range, which debuted yesterday at Paris Fashion Week. This iteration is subtler, compared to the men's fare, but it's a tribute nonetheless. A few pairs of unconventional pumps featured the Balenciaga-ized Sanders logo on the side.
We've seen plenty of political statements this fashion month, from anti-Trump messages at Public School to Women's March "pussy hats" at Missoni; but the Sanders shoutouts seem to remain in Balenciaga territory.
Feeling the Bern just got a whole lot chicer.
