As Covid-19 vaccines rollout across the country, we're trying to imagine what post-pandemic gyms will look like. But it's important to remember that for now, the mask mandate is still in full effect and will be for the foreseeable future. Listen, we all know that working out in a mask isn’t fun, but thankfully, top brands like Lululemon and Under Armour have spent months creating innovative face masks made from breathable materials with thoughtful design details for optimum comfort. And now, there's another performance brand getting into the face mask game: New Balance.

New Balance recently released the New Balance Active Face Mask, a lightweight face covering features three layers of a cooling spandex-blended fabric with anti-chafe and moisture-wicking technology. Lucky for you, today the brand restocked their inventory of the masks, just in time for us to share our review after testing it for over a week while leveling up our fitness game.

At first glance, one can instantly see the thoughtful details that New Balance took into consideration. While some brands might have rushed out their face masks in the early days of the pandemic, it’s clear the brand was carefully taking all needs into account. Similar to Lululemon’s face mask (which is not intended for workouts, more for casual outings), New Balance went with a double-strap construction for a secure fit that prevents any ear irritation (a popular complaint consumers have for the Adidas and Reebok masks). The straps are adjustable and have a great amount of elasticity, so they’ll fit exactly how you want them to, but without stretching out too much to a point that's problematic.

Another smart design choice was the Olson-style shape that provides ample breathing room, so you won’t feel like you’re eating a chunk of fabric every time you take a big inhale through the mouth. To make sure that fit stays on point with this extra room, the Active Face Mask features a moldable nose bridge, creating the perfect dome shape that’s locked into place. Another detail to appreciate about the mask is the extra piece of fabric by the chin area, which also ensures your mask won’t ride up during quick movements, even if you were attempting a set of Superman pushups.

While the next-level fit might sound like it makes breathing difficult, that’s not the case here. The poly-spandex-blended fabric makes it thinner than the UA Sportsmask. While some masks can create a swamp face situation, creating a pool of sweat inside your masks as you tackle an intense workout, this one stayed relatively dry, thanks to the fabric’s moisture-capability and breathability. Plus, the texture against your face is smooth and non-irritating, making it as enjoyable of an experience a guy can have when wearing any mask during a workout.

Overall, the mask hits all the right notes to be dubbed one of the best workout face masks on the market right now, especially for night runners who will appreciate the reflective stitching detail on the front of the mask.

The Active Face Mask is available in four sizes and retails for $25 and in 4 different sizes. Full-grown men might be better suited for a M/L or L/XL size, but the site offers information for how to measure your face to find your perfect fit. Plus, it comes with a wearable carrying case, so you’ll never leave it behind. Though New Balance might seem late to the game, that only means they took their time to perfect the active face mask, and by golly, we think they've done it.

We suggest you jump on this new workout mask before it sells out again.
