New Balance is planting a flag on May with a month-full of dedicated sneaker releases celebrating it signature greyscale colorways.

The brand’s annual “Grey Days” celebration will see at least ten different sneakers take on dedicated colorways across the month. The assortment kicks off Wednesday with the 327, 574 and 550 sneakers releasing alongside complementary apparel. Special editions of the Wrpd Runner and 1906R will then follow May 17, and contemporary running sneakers will be accounted for through the Fresh Foam X 1080 and a District Vision SC Elite v4 collaboration arriving on May 20 and May 23, respectively. Kawhi Leonard’s new Kawhi 4 will also release on May 23, and closing out the month will be Coco Gauff’s Coco CG1 tennis sneaker and the Fresh Foam Audazo Numeric skateboarding shoe.

New Balance will also release a “Grey Days” short film May 10 as the first campaign of its kind and featuring appearances from athletes including Andrew Reynolds, Chase Young, Brianna Selby and more.

“This film celebrates not only what Grey means to us as a brand, but also what it means to New Balance
consumers,” Chris Davis, chief marketing officer and senior vice president of Merchandising for new Balance said in a press release. “It recognizes sub-cultural New Balance fans who have stood by our brand and the emblem of Grey for generations. It also recognizes the ubiquity of the color Grey, appealing to people everywhere from supermodels in London, to dads in Ohio, to sneaker connoisseurs in Toyko. Grey is a color for all that represents authenticity, versatility, and timelessness, carrying our heritage into the future.”

Grey has long been a go-to for New Balance because it indicated a rejection of trendiness while serving to highlight the technology on a given sneaker. Greyscale colorways have also lent themselves to timeliness and played a huge role in New Balance’s sneakers being incorporated into the “dad style” trend in recent years.

Although it’s harder to peg down precisely when New Balance began favoring grey, the decision became a real focal point in the ’80s. The Grey Day(s) annual celebration than began in 2018.
