  • The Royal Family apparently has a fun tradition of exchanging novelty gifts.

  • Meghan Markle was reportedly invited to participate in the tradition ahead of her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry.

  • Meghan brought her gifting A-game, with novelties that delighted her future in-laws.

Remember when Royal Family news was quaint? When it was just, "Here's a silly thing some fancy people did"? Before it became all about spiteful jewelry choices and possible financial crimes? Well, we have good news! There's some good news for a change.

Granted, it's about things that happened in 2018, but it's news to the public, since it was published in Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family, a new biography about Meghan and Prince Harry.

A report from The Mirror reveals that within the biography is a frankly adorable anecdote about a holiday tradition for members of the Royal Family, one Meghan was welcomed into shortly before her wedding to Prince Harry.

"The family has a tradition of swapping novelty gifts," The Mirror reports. "Usually unmarried partners of the royals are not allowed to attend these close knit events and even Prince William's now wife Kate was excluded while the pair were merely engaged."

But reportedly, the late Queen Elizabeth made an exception for Meghan, who attended one of these gift-giving gatherings five months before her wedding to Harry. Meghan knew her novelty gifts had to be top-notch, and apparently what she found kept the in-laws amused.

"At least one of her gifts was a huge hit," the report says, "...a spoon for William that had 'cereal killer' embossed on the shallow bowl end of the utensil."

Sure, for most of us that's just an innocuous gift, the kind that gets a light chuckle when we see it in a novelty shop. But remember, the Royal Family probably doesn't get to a Spencer's Gifts or Gadgets & Gizmos that often, so there's a good chance this was the first time any of them had seen anything like this.

That's also probably true of the novelty gift Markle gave the late-Queen: "She presented her with a singing toy hamster which was reportedly loved by the corgis."

You remember those singing hamsters? They'd sing, like, a sped-up version of "Kung Fu Fighting"? A real early-2000s sensation? Anyway, apparently the Royals missed out on this fad back in the day.

Which, when you think about it, is important information to have. If they missed out on 2000s-era fads, then why spend an exorbitant amount on jewels and horses as official gifts, when apparently we could just dazzle them with "totally-new-to-them" items like Tamagotchi, "Vote for Pedro" t-shirts, and a netbook loaded up with Hampster Dance?
